So far I am really liking the Wii U, but last night I had some people over and decided to impress them by downloading a party type game, so we chose Sonic Racing. My internet connection is fiber optic through FIOS and the download took a whopping 6-8 hours. My friends went home and I let the download go while I went to sleep and after it finished this morning it then started to "install" which is saying "time remaining 28 seconds" but its already been installing for 30 minutes and its not even half way done. Is this some kind of a joke, or are console players just so used to garbage network optimization that this is expected. I can download a 15GB game on my PC through steam and it takes about 1 hour tops. I figured maybe going to a wired connection might help, but oh, you need to buy a special adapter for that???

Im so glad I bought the deluxe edition Wii U with the upcoming discount on Nintendo Store titles.....maybe not so much.

I am not a pretty tech savvy person, so I'm not sure if I am missing something here, but is there anything I can do (port forwarding, UDP, TCP) with my router to help with this.

Thanks!

It's not your connection it's Nintendo's servers, they are somewhat...slow. That or they are constantly under heavy strain. Also the ETA only counts hours and minutes, it was listing 28 minutes not seconds. When there are only a few seconds left it says "<1 Minute"

Yes, consoles do not download as fast as PC, but the Wii U is slow even by that comparison.
We could chalk it down to their servers being bombarded as it's launch weekend in Europe, but who knows.
Usually companies just don't have enough servers to handle demand the first few weeks, look at diablo 3.
It'll probably improve.

Read the internet, you get 8 points for every 10 euro or GBP you spend(rates might differ for americans), once you get 500 points, you will be able to claim 5 euro or gbp off another purchase.

It will get better with time. Nintendo obviously under estimated the demand for eShop downloads and will most likely update the infrastructure to give us faster downloads. Also remember with the system only being out a short while and just releasing in the UK, the more people accessing the downloads the slower it will be.

This is the launch window for wii u plus there is the christmas day surge of users to come. Neither will be good times to download wii u games. At other times Nintendo's servers won't be so over-loaded.

Maybe wii u games download at a speed so as not to impact online gaming. I assume you can download in the background when running games like 360 and PS3.

It seems to be a problem with Nintendo's servers as well as the OS itself. I downloaded the FIFA demo which is approximately 1.2GB in size. It took me about 17 minutes to download and another 8 minutes to install. I'm on an 80 meg fibre optic connection and it shouldn't take that long to download. Installation is also very slow and that has to be an issue with the console and the OS itself. As for what you were seeing during installation it was probably 28 minutes and not 28 seconds which is ridiculously long to install a game.

That would seem strange considering its meant to be flash memory storage and not a hard drive.

no some notebooks use flash memory, SSD flash drives to be exact, and some were dreadfully slow at writing, i use to be an it technician and had to set these up, and the took soooooooooooooo long

here is one, and 8gb version lol, hum wonder if that the one in the basic wii http://www.aliexpres...eee-pc-8gb.html

heres a 32gb version for the premium lol http://www.memoryc.c...00a9011000.html

i know i laugh but these are probably the type, very slow write times

I won't be downloading any huge retail games, I plan on downloading eshop games only.

Woah. It probably is Nintendo's servers as I've downloaded way bigger file sizes than that and I also have FiOS.
And, since I don't have my Wii U yet, can you download things like the update or games while you play or do something else?

Yes there is background downloading.
