Dear All,
I wonder if anyone else has this problem. I have my Wii U connected to my Yamaha RX-A820 receiver using an HDMI cable. This outputs surround sound perfectly well. The test tone from the setup menu fires on all the speakers. No problems.
The only issue I have, is that periodically, the sound stops for like half a second, then starts again. It happens infrequently, but is super annoying. So it will be happily making surround music, then nothing, then back to normal.
The issue happens whilst playing games (Mario World, Zombi U) as well as on the Wii U Menu screen, so it can't be the games, it must be the Wii.
The receiver is LPCM compatible (it's a new model) and the receiver does not do this on any other sources (Playstation 3, XBOX 360, Blu Ray player etc). If that codec was the problem, it would just not play any sound at all, so I'm stumped!
I've played around with all the settings I could find on both the Wii U and the receiver with no luck. My only conclusion is the Wii U has a problem. Has anyone else experienced this same issue?
Thanks!

I also have a Yamaha receiver and have sound problems specifically related to not being able to output to all channels despite my reciever displaying 5.1 it only outputs to the front left, front right, sw and rear right speakers, nothing comes out of the rear left or centre speakers at all no matter what settings I try, but everything else works perfectly. Maybe this is just a Nintendo thing an for whatever reason they don't get on well with Yamaha recievers.
Just wondering how have you got the wii u connected hdmi to reciever then reciever to TV/projector like me? also what type of cable are you using the wii U hdmi cable or a different one? Because to date I haven't been able to fix my sound issues either.

I have it hooked up as you say - Wii U to Receiver using HDMI, then Receiver to TV using HDMI. I'm not using the Nintendo cable, as I had a bunch of cables already. The cables should be irrelevant though, as HMDI is digital - it will either work 100% or 0%.
I've found a lot of people with the same issue you mention - no sound at all out the rear speakers. My rear speakers work fine 99% of the time. It's just EVERY speaker goes silence for half a second every minute or so. Weird!
Good luck with your problem.
