My 500gb Toshiba hard drive for Wii U still going strong, had to connect with Y cable as single USB port wasn't enough to power it.
So, turns out single USB powered drives do work

Some single USB HDD will work, but I found out that mine didn't work, and had to search online for a solution. Thank God I knew to get a y-cable thanks to these forums, or I could have ended up throwing out the HDD.
