I just bought a Toshiba 500GB USB External for my Wii U and it costs just under £42 which I think is a steal.

It has a low power consumption of 5w and supports USB 2.0 so I think the Wii U can power this itself via USB without any issues.

Please note this is for UK, link here:

Personally I wouldn't buy Toshiba as its not a brand that widely used and hasn't proven its reliability. The only brands which are worth getting are ones like Seagate, Western Digital and LaCie.

I bought that.
But beware, one usb port wasn't enough to power it from my wii u, you should look at getting a USB3 y-cable if you want it.
Like this.

As I'm sure you all know, a USB3 connection is not the same as USB1 or 2 connection, it looks like this:

Nintendo recommended Toshiba when deciding an external hard drive, it's cheap as well, also most users haven't had a problem yet using Toshiba hard drives with the Wii U.

Since when do Nintendo recommend Toshiba hard drives. All I've read is that they have put them on the compatibility list. That's not the same as recommending them. Recommending for compatibility is not the same as recommending for reliability.

I never said Toshiba was a bad brand. I've owned Toshiba products too. That said they are not known for their hard drives and people shouldn't be buying them over better and more reliable brands like the ones I mentioned even if they are cheaper. I've worked in retail selling computer hardware as well as worked in IT so I know what I'm talking about.

The Wii U isn't compatible with USB 3.

The Wii U isn't compatible with USB 3.

Yes it is.
It just won't use USB3 speeds.

I don't like toshiba hard drives either, but cheap is cheap.

Fair enough but personally I rather pay more and get something of quality especially when I know I'm going to have a lot of valuable data on it.

Even Samsung aren't super anymore. They were bought by seagate,
Seagate were my second choice, but still :'(

WD are in the same boat as toshiba for me.

Most hard drives come from the same place these days anyway.

Wouldn't you need a Y cable to be safe? I heard people had trouble with Toshiba branded USB drives.

I disagree. Regardless there is a distinct difference in quality between brands.
