Here is my question. I have PS3/Xbox360/Wii U and love them all, but the 8GB in my Wii U basic (even 32 in the pro) is too small. No problem as I have an external hard drive I can put on it (500GB). My question is this. There will be game patches at some point to fix bugs, help with game performance, etc. I am wondering where these patches will install. I see it being difficult to put a patch on the external hard drive as if removed the game would freak out. With only 3GB of free space now there is almost no space for game patches. Many of which on the other systems top 1gb.

So were will the patches for games install?

Everything downloads to USB if you have one connected in my experience.
I assume they go to the internal flash if you don't have one.
