I have synced 2 new wii u remotes but when playing Mario u the remotes will not connect. Any suggestions? It will let me play with an old wii remote.

Try restarting the Wii U, take the batteries out, re-insert them, re-sync. Etc.

yes at the moment you can only use one wii u gamepad with a wii u, nintendo are releasing a update in the future to allow more to be used, not sure when this will be though.
