No, it's unlikely that Nintendo will ever implement dvd/blu ray features in any of their consoles/handhelds. Though the Wii U does have a few video services like Netflix, Hulu Plus, Nintendo Tvii, and Amazon Instant Video just to name a few.

That sucks : ( I know that Homebrew is looked down on in this community but DVD support was why I installed Homebrew on my Wii. Something as basic as DVD support should've been implemented on the WiiU, what would've been even better is BluRay.

This has already been discussed extensively in a previous thread. You should use the search feature in the future.

To answer your question its not possible to play DVD's and it never will. This is a conscious decision made by Nintendo as to include DVD playback would incur a licence fee for even Wii U sold which either they would have to consume or pass on to the consumers. They believe DVD playback is not neccessary.

as chep as blu ray layers are i doubt it.
Why would you want to anyways its just going to kill the laser faster when you can get a cheap dvd /blu ray player.
