Just went to the dentists and was told I'll need a root canal or I can go with an extraction (rip my tooth out) worst part is root canal with a crown will cost about 550 pounds.
So I have a few questions, has anyone experienced a root canal before? if so was it painful or a generally bad experience?
Also can I get root canals done through nhs health care?
Lastly is there much of a difference between nhs and private dental care?
Really hope I don't have to have my tooth out because it would be sorta noticeable and everyone says I have a gorgeous smile (even the dentist said so and yes it was a woman ) I have about 200 pound myself but my mum wouldn't be able to pay the rest of the bill so if nhs doesn't cover root canal and crowns then I'm sorta screwed.

This is a lesson ladies and gentlemen, if you don't care of your teeth this will happen. I have not a single cavity.

Hopefully you get to keep your tooth, TC.

I have had a root canal before was not as bad as ithought but they could not fit the crown on cause i had to much gum in the way so I had to go to a gum specialist and get some of my gums cut removed that was not fun and I had stiches in my mouth. I had to get my root canal cause I had a craked tooth and waitied to long to fix it and the tooth went bad so they did a root canal like a said and a crown.

Did my own :)
IT didnt really hurt. By the time you need a root canal the neves are dead.
But if ur getting it done at there office it should be painless. They will numb you first.
The same with the crown. Just that the crown may hurt later or fill like pressure.

Because having a root canal means you had cavities... I had to have one because I was in an accident that lead me to have one of two choices. Either loose some teeth or my life. (Lucky it was only one tooth that got bashed out to become loose). Which would you choose? (Only saying not much of a lesson in all cases).

@OP: As for root canals they do not hurt. The most I felt when getting mine was the pressure of the drill grinding out my tooth. I will say the whole process is annoying though. Get a temp filling in the hole to have to come back to spend more money in order to get the permanent filling.

My dentist told me that an untreated cavity could lead to a root canal, obviously you know more than a dentist does so you're probably right. Although there's tons of possibilities for needing a "root canal."

^ Yeah, but fake teeth cost a lot. Not to mention if he can have a root canal to fix it why would you want to lose your real teeth?

Um, right never said I was an expert in dentistry. I was only saying it was not always the case as a good example. As you do not need a cavity to need a root canal.

(Update)
I went to nhs dentist today and although they didn't mention a root canal and crown they did mention the cavity and that it'd need a filling. I think that they did a root canal on me although they never said "we're doing a root canal" they drilled away the bad parts and filled it with a temporary filling. They also used some antibiotics so I wouldn't get an infection. Going back in a week or two for the permanent filling. Also no crown mentioned :D and it was free :D

Yea same thing I did.
Sounds like a root canal butits kinda the same as a filling. They just drill deeper on to get to the root.
And cool it was free.

You're probably using a tooth paste with too much sugar, it happens.

To answer UnchainedGoku's question, cavities can be hereditary. In some events, your mother or father (or their mother or father) have pH levels in their mouths that make it more susceptible to bacterial growth and development. It means the care you give your teeth has to absolutely substantial... unfortunately. My own dentist told me this after my own dental issues. I would recommend speaking to your parents and your regular dentist about this issue.

Really, well I never knew that, well what's the point in toothpaste if your just gonna fill it with sugar then lmao, some of these companies are beyond logic lmao

I have had one!
Doesn't hurt really... and once they actually have your tooth chizzled down getting the new one doesn't take long (about 30 - 40 mins)
But damn those needles sticking into my gums!

I've had 4 wisdom teeth removed. 2 at a time. The first lot I had one needle and couldn't feel a thing. The second lot I had 7 needles and could still feel it.

I did when I was seven or eight and I chipped one of my front teeth. The operation was very painful, and I have a permanent cap instead of an actual tooth in my mouth even to this day.
