Wii remotes didn't have it's own battery either. It relied off third party batteries.I bought a couple rechargeable battery packs for my wii-motes and they have worked great and have lasted at least 2 years.

The battery life is hardly ever a problem for me, and as some others here have stated, I don't really like using 3rd party hardware or opening things up... If the battery life ever does bug me, I might consider it, but for now, it's fine; I always put it back in it's charging cradle when I'm not using it.
