So either I wasn't paying attention to recent news or Nintendo has been very quiet about this
I was looking at the tech specs page of the Wii U at the official website and it had stated that the Wii U OS is open source and they had a link to the page where you can download it (below)

I'm not sure what this means, but I hope it gives us the ability to customise the OS (Custom Background Anyone?)

Those look like development software libraries. They're not as far as I'm aware going to allow consumers to modify the existing UI. so no you won't be able to customise the UI.

Hmm, that's interesting...
But yeah, even if you could modify the menu it would probably count as modified data which violates the user agreement.

since i live in lebanon i have slow as hell internet and the power cuts every 2 hours so can i download the newest os update and put on my wii u?

And it's only the parts which are Open Source.
They did this previously too, with the 3DS' Web-browser since it used source from webkit.

LOL they sell legit Wii U's in Lebanon? Last time I was there I didn't find any legit console.

(yeah I'm from Lebanon but live in Canada).

On topic: I highly doubt they would allow you to modify anything... Wouldn't it be a breach allowing people to hack in some way? I'm not a hacker, so I don't know.

Yes, they do sell wii u's in lebanon. Im lebanese , I live there and I own an updated wii u.
