“The hardware is powerful and we haven’t had any limitations. Visually, because we’ve had more time with the UbiArt engine, we were able to add a lot of depth to the graphics. You can especially see it in the backgrounds. There are more layers, more details; it feels more like a landscape. We’ve also done a lot with the lighting effects, both in gameplay and graphics.” - Michel Ancel

Awesome article but I played the demo and that type of game wouldn't really push the boundaries of the hardware surely.

Lighting would, the backgrounds are rendered and feature interactions with them in the demo I played.

Stop thinking a game isn't taxing a system just because it's a 2D game where you go left or right.

True. I once used to have that impression too, until I saw that sidescrollers could be HD like Trine 2.

On topic: Great article. Proof once more that the Wii U still isn't close to its full potential.

If he's' not hitting its limitations, they aren't doing it right!

Beautiful silky smooth 2D 1080p graphics is where the wii u will beat the 360 and PS3. Superior feature set in the gpu, 32 meg of ultra fast video memory, less taxing on cpu resources. This is the sort of game that will excel on wii u. I hope when they say not taxing the system it doesn't mean its been scaled back due to later 360 and PS3 versions. I hope Nintendo push this area in their future releases. I'd like to see 3D tv support too. This is something that the wii u should be capable of for 2D platform games.

How do you figure that ? The limitations of consoles are never reached early in their life cycle. Considering the Wii U has only been out for two months its going to be quite a while before it's limitation is reached.

Loved the demo! I thought it looked great graphically, easily as good or better than what is possible on the PS3 and 360. If this can look better than the PS3 and 360 while pushing two screens as once and (according to this article) not pushing the boundaries of what the wii u can do graphically then I'm pretty sure the wii u is very powerful. AND it can multitask 6 internet tabs at the same time! (I've been messing around with the browser all day)

If all that doesn't prove that the wii u is powerful then the PS360 fanboys are even more thick headed then I thought...

There is a limit to what they can currently do. What he said is that they aren't hitting any limitations, so obviously they aren't trying to get the most out of the system, is my point. Otherwise they'd be hitting those limits.

well they are making a 2d game (mostly) their only so much they can do they already have it 1080p 60 fps really the only thing they could do is used uncompressed textures but that is unreasonable to do and won't really be noticed by most people.

Well your point makes no sense what so ever as its never the case that the full potential is reached this early in the life cycle of a console. There is a difference between knowing how to and/or trying and actually doing it. For the sake of repeating myself devs are not going to hit the ceiling of what the hardware can do this early even if they tried. Its going to take them time to understand the hardware and learn how to get the most out of it. This can be seen in the improvement of games from the early stages in the life cycle of any console to games that are released for it several years down the road.

Who said "full"?
I thought she said "no", meaning one of many.
One could potentially fill a Blu-ray disc with porn and hit the limit on the disc's capacity if they wanted to.
It is you who isn't making sense.

Furthermore.
When a limit is reached, then the developers will attempt to learn how to improve their work and work around issues they run into, increasing the quality of their work, and getting more from the console's hardware.
In the case of Metal Gear Solid, they could compress their textures so they don't fill a Blu-Ray disc for no reason.
In the case of Call of Duty, they could decrease the render resolution so they can get more frames in every second.
Etc.
There's no reason for a limit not to be reached before the system is being sold, because it's already 2 or 3 years old by the time it's on sale anyway.
It's only a problem if they can't work around it.
