Nowadays anything could happen.

I think it's a givin.
I read, listen and talk to ps4, 720 fans / wii & nintendo haters and they're all on the sony and MS bandwagon and dog out nintendo.
Now, being someone who has a wii, ps3, vita, 3ds and wii-u, i'd like to think I'm reasonably minded fan wise.
But these next systems will not outdo wiiu simply because sony and MS buyers (majority wise) are not going to buy console day 1 or near launch because
1. they will claim the launch games suck
2. they want to wait for the price drop
3. they want to get the upgraded version 1-2 years down the road
4. they're content with their 360 or ps3 for now
5. all the above
wiiu has sold over 3 million in about 3 months. i can PROMISE, ms and sony WILL NOT ACCOMPLISH THAT.

LOL you can promise nothing but you can assume what you like!
Very easy to see one or the other company achieving better sales with the right marketing and launch titles.Unlike nintendo you can be assured that even now ms and sony are bending over backwards to accomodate the big third party devs. For this reason one or the other of these consoles will surely launch with an all new battlefield or call of duty title amongst others to show off the new tech and get the existing fanbase of these type of titles onboard.Could easily be the difference between the wiiu launch sales and something more.
I see some are saying that the new consoles will be prohibitively dear, I dont think so both ms and sony will have done extensive research into pricing and have watched the wiiu launch data as well.In the uk I would expect (realistically) to pay around 400 pounds for one of these new consoles.Having paid 329 for my wiiu I think its reasonable that hard core/and or new fans will find the extra 70/100/120 for one of these. Also sony will be pricing keener than ever I think as they will see the launch price of the ps3 as one of their biggest mistakes last gen.

It's very possible with the right pricing, marketing, and launch titles.
Right now, the price is up in the air, but we can probably assume that both parties will have better third party support than Nintendo had/has with the Wii U. Marketing is kinda up in the air with Sony. Based on what they've done with the Vita, they could mess that up. And both are most likely going to be marketed as powerhouses compared to the Wii U (and it's likely they are) so tech buffs already might have reason to jump in.
