Nintendo needs big guns within the first 6 months of Wii U2 life. Not third party guns, their guns. Lead with a Mario at launch, two months down a new IP, and then four months after launch a Zelda/Metroid (or some other known IP) and finally after six months from launch another known IP. During this time they need to be pushing third parties to release their IP's, all a while they will be selling tons of consoles. After the first six months, Nintendo can slow down and build for the second and third year.

I think Nintendo need to do both. Nintendo need three high quality first party title like a 3D Mario, a Zelda and a Metroid game as well as something similar to Nintendoland to show off the new gameplay features. However they also need to start making a console that's designed around third parties and their needs so that the console is easy to develop for. So at launch they have as many developers up on stage as Sony did for the PS4.

Oh and trailers of future new IPs, lots and lots of new IPs for both younger and mature audiences

Biggest mistake is depending on third party support to carry their system. Since Microsoft entered the game with massive money and R&D budgets Nintendo's third party support disappeared forever. It's not coming back unless Microsoft or Sony bow out. Nintendo needs to buy a third party company to develop kits for game studios that are world class tools. Nintendo needs to admit to itself that they need to carry the entire system with their software and buy, develop, and expand their existing game studios and new ip's. Buy ip's that are popular to Japan and expand them. Realize that North America is the gaming center of the world now and expand NST and Retro to pump out software and new IP's suited to this region. Aggressively buy small studios to find the next Minecraft or Farmville hits. Nintendo you are a software company not a hardware company so put out games already.

Nintendo can't control third parties. They can work with them, like they are with Lego City Underground. But in the end all they can do is create games. And that's all they need.
