Supposed 3DS Successor

05 December 2013 - 02:44 PM

We all know that one day Nintendo will start developing a successor to the 3DS. In fact, Miyamoto himself stated that they have already started thinking about it.

So, let's speculate a bit.

First thing - the 3DS is, beyond any doubts, going to stick around for another 3-4, maybe even 5 years. The system has been selling like hot cakes ever since its price cut in August 2011. Huge success for Nintendo ! With that, it's been almost 3 years since the system launched and I think at this point we can start wondering about what the future of Nintendo handhelds holds.

Now, Nintendo, in my opinion, is the most unpredictable company in the market, which makes it hard to guess what ideas they might come up with. However, what we can do here is to discuss what we want it to be as potential consumers. What kind of a device you want it to be ?

My choice

31 July 2013 - 10:07 PM

I had never owned a handheld console. You know, if you are mostly a PC gamer, you might have somewhat skeptical attitude even towards home consoles, not to mention handheld devices. That was until one moment when I felt a wierd, unexplainable and unresistable urge to spend some cash. Sometimes it happens. You got to buy something immediately to settle your nerves. It could be anything - a book, a protein shake, a bag of oranges or a new t-shirt. Perhaps, it is a mania of sorts, something like pyromania, kleptomania, etc. But, indeed, it is a feeling that is hard to resist. So, on that very day I decided to go to my local Gamestop to seek for a relief. One though struck me as I was approaching - I f***ing need to get a handheld device. But which one to choose ?

For almost half an hour I was thoroughly analyzing all the possible outcomes of such investment. Vita or 3DS ? At one point I almost decided to get me a Vita - more powerful system, has Stardust (to which I was insanely addicted once), Soul Sacrifice, Dragon's Crown, Uncharted. All those are solid arguments to favor Vita. On the other hand, there is 3DS - less powerful, but.. Plays DS games, has Zelda, Starfox, Monster Hunter 3 and Donkey Kong. After quick brainstorming and recalling what I had known about the system, I made up my mind. And my choice, as you might expect, was... 3DS.

It was the first OFFICIAL Nintendo console I bought (I believe I mentioned buying an NES clone in the mid 90's, which, despite having the same exact library of games as the original NES, can't be considered an official Nintendo system). And you know what ? It is wonderful !

I don't want to waste your time telling you what you all already know, so I will just say that I totally enjoy the system (and remember, I'm a PC gamer for the most part). The only thing that looks a little anachronic to me is the stylus. It may feel a little clumsy when you have to use it in certain games. But it doesn't really matter. I do believe that I made the right choice and picked the system with solid library of amazing games. Having missed Ocarina of Time (an unexcusable thing for someone who consider him/herself a gamer), I now clearly see and understand why it is believed to be one of the very finest games in history.

There is something VERY special about Nintendo. Chances are that it will be Nintendo who is going to bring me back the sweetest joy of playing games, just the way it was when I was a kid.

Sorry for that stream of consciousness, folks. Just felt like speaking out a bit

Google developing Android based console

28 June 2013 - 02:10 PM

According to the Wall Street Journal, Google is actively developing an Android-based games console, which could arrive as soon as this fall. Citing anonymous sources, the report claims that the console is part of a bevy of secret projects, including a new smartwatch and a revamped version of its failed Nexus Q set-top streaming device. Additional details are sparse, but given the recent influx of Android gaming platforms, like the Ouya, Project Shield, GameStick, and others, a Google-produced gaming product isn't outside the realm of reason.

Things are not that bright for the big N these days. It certainly needs some first party love. And the sooner the better.
