You don't need to connect your NNID and Club Nintendo account to get the free game, but it's a good idea to do it... Go to the eShop, click "My Menu", and scroll down to settings. Click show all, and there should be an option to link your Club Nintendo account... To get the free game, you can just go to Club Nintendo on your computer, and as long as you entered your MK8 code sometime after release, there should be a banner on the website about the free game offer... Click on that, and it should be pretty easy from there.
