#298077 California Plastic Bag Ban Would Be First Of Its Kind In The Nation

Posted by Zinix on 06 September 2014 - 07:30 PM in The Café

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Aug 30 (Reuters) - The California state legislature enacted a ban on plastic grocery bags on Friday near the end of its two-year session, a measure that if signed into law would become the first of its kind in America.

A number of cities and counties in California and other U.S. states, including Hawaii's Maui County, have made it illegal for grocery stores to pack purchases in plastic. But at the state level, opposition from plastic bag makers has usually prevailed.

The California Senate voted 22-15 for the bill, which must be signed into law by Sept. 30 by Democratic Governor Jerry Brown, who has not signaled a position on the measure.

"Single-use plastic bags not only litter our beaches, but also our mountains, our deserts, and our rivers, streams and lakes," said state Senator Alex Padilla, who sponsored the bill.

Padilla backed a similar measure last year but it failed by three votes. The fate of this bill was uncertain until the waning hours of the session after falling three votes short in the state's Assembly on Monday.

But after picking up the support of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, the bill passed a second vote in the Assembly.

The measure would ban grocery stores from handing out single-use grocery bags with customers' purchases, and provide money to local plastic bag companies to retool to make heavier, multiple-use bags that customers could buy.

Environmentalists have pushed for banning plastic bags, which are cheaper for supermarkets to use than paper bags, but create mountains of trash that is difficult to recycle. In California, there is particular concern that the bags, when swept out to sea, could harm ocean life.

After the defeat of his earlier bill, Padilla won the support of some California-based bag makers by including the funding for retooling. But in recent months, out-of-state manufacturers campaigned against the bill, even producing television advertisements targeting Padilla, who is running for secretary of state.

Cathy Browne, general manager at Crown Poly, a plastic bag manufacturer in Huntington Park, California, said the bill would lead to layoffs at companies like hers.

More than 10 billion plastic bags are used in California each year, according to an estimate by Californians Against Waste, an advocacy group supporting the bill. (Writing by Eric M. Johnson; Editing by Sharon Bernstein and Mark Heinrich)

#297909 Destiny General Discussion Thread- The Game of The Year, Game of The Forever.

Posted by Zinix on 03 September 2014 - 07:07 PM in General Gaming

I wasn't hype about this game. Imo it's Halo mixed with board lands.
But i ended up playing the beta and it's pretty cool and fun. I did like board lands and was glad it's more towards that side then halo.
I pre-order it and will be picking it up at launch.
The game does look so great.
I'll probably just do single player for a while then hope online.

Play online mannnnn. It's going to be competitive.

Kevin Adorno, 28, of Connecticut, was traveling to see his girlfriend, Elyse, when the incident occurred, The Daily Mail reports. Police found an engagement ring in Adorno's pocket at the scene.

FOX CT reports a witness told police that Adorno may have bought food and sat to eat before going outside, where he was attacked. While he was outside, and the witness tried to help him, FOX CT adds.

Police said Adorno was stabbed several times in the chest and arm, and died from blood loss. The Daily Mail says Adorno was on the phone with his girlfriend when the stabbing occurred. She later told police that she heard the phone drop and sirens before the call ended.

When questioned, Rene Herrera Cruz told police he thought Adorno was calling people to attack him. In reality, Adorno was talking to his girlfriend who he was going to propose to when he got to Florida later this week, WFSB 3 says.

Police Chief David Currey says Adorno was biking through six states as a "bucket list" trip, Fox News reports.

#297772 Chibatman, Japanese Batman cosplayer, cruises Chiba City on custom-made '...

Posted by Zinix on 01 September 2014 - 06:46 PM in The Café

A 41-year-old welder has gone undercover as Japan's answer to Batman, cruising the streets of Chiba City dressed in a bat suit and riding a custom-made "batpod" on a mission to bring laughter.

The identity of the person behind "Chibatman" is a closely guarded secret, but the would-be superhero cruises his city's streets on his three-wheeled "Chibatpod" – based on the motorcycle used by Batman in the hit movie The Dark Knight.

Chibatman said that, unlike his Gotham City counterpart, his mission is to bring smiles rather than fight crime.

"During the great earthquake people forgot how to smile," he said. "I wanted to help bring them back, and that's why I started."

He has been seen driving around on his heavily modified vehicle for nearly three years, but became an internet superhero recently after a video of him riding along a highway in Japan in full costume went viral.

The modified three-wheeled motorcycle that brought much of Chibatman's fame cost about $6,165 to buy and modify.

"It took me around four months to build," he said.

"If you put your back into it though, it's something that can be done."

Now a superstar in his home town, Chibatman is inspiring people like 11-year-old Hayama Shinohara.

"I think it's cool how he goes around town dressed as Batman without feeling embarrassed at all," Hayama said.

Chibatman also dresses up as a Star Wars storm trooper and drives around in a truck to get people to laugh.

He said he plans to continue his hobby, though he reportedly has no plans to build a Batmobile.

#297638 Joan Rivers is on life support guys.

Posted by Zinix on 31 August 2014 - 03:21 AM in The Café

Joan Rivers has been put on life support, TMZ reports.

According to sources, the comedian's family maintains faith in Rivers' ability to bounce back even if they decide to turn off the machines. They still have a few days to make a decision whether or not they will take Rivers off life support.

Rivers was rushed to the hospital on Thursday after she stopped breathing while undergoing a procedure on her vocal chords. She was initially in critical condition, but was upgraded to stable later that day. On Friday, her daughter Melissa released a statement saying Rivers was "resting comfortably and is with our family."

#297163 BREAKING: "Full House" is coming back to TV! Original cast includ...

Posted by Zinix on 27 August 2014 - 05:41 PM in The Café

ttp://www.tvguide.com/News/Full-House-Revival-1086245.aspx

Could a Full House return be in the works? The family sitcom, which aired on ABC from 1987 to 1995, is still a ratings juggernaut via repeats on Nick at Nite. Now Warner Bros. TV is mulling a new take on Full House, with some of the original cast intact.

Leading the charge is John Stamos (Uncle Jesse) — who has an ownership stake in the show, which gives him good reason to champion the new series. Original executive producer Bob Boyett and creator Jeff Franklin (who's writing the new version) are actively involved. Candace Cameron Bure (D.J.), Jodie Sweetin (Stephanie) and Andrea Barber (Kimmy) are on board, while Bob Saget (Danny) and Dave Coulier (Joey) are also involved in some way.

The cast has remained tight-knit and some of the actors have let it slip in the past that they'd like to see Full House return. Stamos, Coulier and Saget appeared in a yogurt commercial earlier this year, and also showed up on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon dressed as their Full House characters. Appearing on Bravo's Watch What Happens Live this past winter, Stamos hinted that a Full House revisit was being pondered: "We're sort of working on a twist on a sequel," he told host Andy Cohen. "But we don't know if it's going to happen yet or not." In 2009, Stamos also told the press that a Full House movie had been developed.

But another comedy from ABC's family-friendly "TGIF" lineup, Boy Meets World, was recently revived on Disney Channel as Girl Meets World. Such a revival would make perfect sense given the timeless popularity of Full House. According to Nick at Nite, repeats of the show in primetime average 1.5 million viewers, up 7 percent from last year. Episodes are also average a 0.4 rating in the key 18-49 demo, up 8 percent from a year ago. The show even has a healthy teen fan base, a demo that wasn't even born when the show ended.

Full House was routinely a Top 25 show during its original run, but ABC canceled it in 1995 as the sitcom became too expensive to continue and tastes changed. Staffers offered to cut their pay in order to keep the show going, but to no avail.

Insiders say the studio pitched a Full House revival last year that would have been set up like FX's Anger Management, in which the network that airs it must pick up a 90-episode slate (produced at an accelerated pace) if the initial 10 episodes hit a certain rating. Ultimately that idea didn't pan out, but as new generations continue to discover Full House, there's no doubt a reboot would generate loads of interest.

It's happening everyone! ;3

#296030 President of Konami contacted Hideo Kojima about making a Silent Hill game

Posted by Zinix on 16 August 2014 - 06:39 AM in General Gaming

Hideo Kojima is open to reviving Policenauts and Snatcher as well as lending a hand to a new Silent Hill game - though it's unlikely he'd be able to take a direct role in any of the projects himself.

"Personally I love adventure games," Kojima said during today's Eurogamer Expo developer session, "and I'd love to see other chapters in the Snatcher or Policenaut series. But from a business perspective it's pretty hard to make that work. I think it's my job to push forward, so I don't think I could make it.

"I do think there's a possibility that I'd make an adventure game in collaboration with someone else who's great at making adventure games - maybe there's a possibility. As far as making a remake of Snatcher, that's something I'd like to attempt. We couldn't do it internally, but maybe we could partner with someone."

Snatcher has been treated to a prequel of sorts in the shape of the catchily titled SDATCHER, a seven episode radio play that aired last year and that was created in collaboration with Suda51.

Kojima also spoke about potentially getting involved with the Silent Hill series - a subject he expressed interest in via Twitter earlier this year.

"In the past I've mentioned Silent Hill in interviews, and as a result of that the president of Konami rung me up and said he'd like me to make the next Silent Hill," Kojima revealed today.

"Honestly, I'm kind of a scaredy-cat when it comes to horror movies, so I'm not confident I can do it. At the same time, there's a certain type of horror that only people who are scared of can create, so maybe it's something I can do.

"That said, I think Silent Hill has a certain atmosphere. I think it has to continue, and I'd love to help it continue, and if I can help by supervising or lending the technology of the Fox Engine, then I'd love to participate in that respect."

Most of the questions sent Kojima's way were, understandably, centred around the Metal Gear series, and he revealed many of his favourite moments from its 25 year history.

"If we're to talk boss characters, then I have one answer," he said. "I've done a lot of boss battles in a lot of games, and one thing I try to accomplish is make something no one has ever seen before. From that perspective, two bosses I'm a fan of are Psycho Mantis from Metal Gear Solid and The Sorrow from Metal Gear Solid 3."

Kojima also spoke of his personal relationship with Snake, and how he's grown with the character that he created. "What I can say is that I've aged alongside Snake, and I've matured along with him," Kojima said. "As long as there's a Snake in Metal Gear Solid, that Snake will always be a part of me, so I don't think I could ever do a Snake that's much younger than myself.

"For example, if at some point if we decided to bring out a JRPG with Snake in his teens, I don't think that's something I could do. I'd have to leave that with the younger staff. As you've seen, Ground Zeroes will feature a slightly older Snake."

#295786 Teenager shot, killed in Ferguson apartment complex

Posted by Zinix on 13 August 2014 - 05:01 PM in The Café

FERGUSON, MO (KTVI) – A shooting in Ferguson has tensions riding high between residents and police. Saturday afternoon, a police involved shooting occurred at the Canfield Green apartment complex in the 2900 block of Canfield. A teenager was shot and killed. An officer from the Ferguson Police Department was involved in the shooting.

At the request of the Ferguson Police Department, the St. Louis County Crimes Against Person Unit is taking over the investigation of the shooting. The police officer involved in the shooting has been put on paid administrative leave.

Witnesses to the shooting say the person shot was an 18-year-old teenager named Michael Brown who was walking in the middle of a street with a friend.

Following the shooting, a large crowd of residents from the apartment complex gathered at the crime scene in the middle of the apartment complex. In response to the crowd, Ferguson police request additional help for crowd control from St. Louis County Police. A spokesperson for St. Louis County Police says a perimeter was set-up around the apartment complex after gun fire was heard in the area.

Late Saturday night St. Louis County Police issued a news release stating that a press conference will be held Sunday at 10 am at Ferguson Police Department.

In response to Saturday’s shooting the St. Louis County NAACP has launched an investigation. The NAACP has also asked the Federal Bureau of Investigation to intervene in the investigation.

The president of the St. Louis County NAACP Missouri State Representative Ester Haywood released the following statement:

“We are hurt to hear that yet another teenaged boy has been slaughtered by law enforcement especially in light of the recent death of Eric Garner in New York who was killed for selling cigarettes. We plan to do everything within our power to ensure that the Ferguson Police Department as well as the St. Louis County Police Department releases all details pertinent to the shooting. We strongly encourage residents to stay away from the crime scene so that no additional citizens are injured. I have spoken directly with St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar, and I am confident that both he and his department will ensure that the investigation is conducted properly and that all details are kept transparent.”

#295639 Rise of the Tomb Raider Is for Xbox One Only

Score one -- a really, really big one -- for Microsoft.

The sequel to the unexpectedly acclaimed 2013 Tomb Raider series reboot, Rise of the Tomb Raider, is going to be exclusively on Xbox One when it launches next holiday 2015. The game was announced in June at E3, but the assumption then was that it would be multi-platform. It was a safe assumption: The original as well as its remastered version were available for Xbox and PlayStation platforms (as well as PC and Mac).
