#276248 Zorro' to be rebooted, gritty Nolan/Dark Knight style

Posted by Zinix on 07 March 2014 - 05:49 PM in The Café

Ever since Antonio Banderas last donned the cape in 2005's The Legend of Zorro, rebooting the Zorro franchise has proven a Sisyphean project for Hollywood. The last we heard about a Zorror film was Fox's Zorro Reborn, a post-apocalyptic interpretation of the hero that was to star Gael García Bernal. That was two years ago. In the meantime, it looks like Sony Pictures -- the studio behind the Banderas films -- is moving ahead with its own competing project that was originally announced around the same time as Reborn.

Deadline reports that Sony has signed Chris Boal to write the studio's Zorro reboot. Not only is Boal a screenwriter, he's also a playwright and competitive fencer.

While that combination may sound like a perfect fit for the franchise, the direction in which the studio reportedly wants to take the story will rankle some Zorro fans. Insiders say that Sony's reboot will take the Dark Knight route, featuring "gritty realism and an emotional core." The swordplay inherent to any Zorro story will remain, but it will be accompanied by European martial arts that combine "swords, daggers, grappling and bare knuckles."

This rumor is amusing considering that the Dark Knight himself was largely inspired by Zorro. In fact, in the comics, Bruce Wayne's parents were killed as the family was leaving the theater where they had just seen a Zorro film.

#294042 Yoshihisa Hashimoto Leaves Square Enix

Yoshihisa Hashimoto’s Luminous Engine:

Hashimoto originally served as technical director for Sega, making his name under the Hedgehog Engine that was critically praised by both critics, and fans globally. Hashimoto left Sega in late 2009 to join Square Enix where he had a huge impact and introduced the world to the trailer of Agni’s Philosophy. Square Enix is yet to release a statement on the news, and the future of the infamous Luminous Engine is in deep water. Check out the trailer of Agni’s Philosophy below and let us know what you think about the news.

#281286 Yoshida Highlights Brushes With Miiverse Law

Posted by Zinix on 13 April 2014 - 10:06 PM in General Gaming

It can be tempting to think of Nintendo as standing alone in terms of companies with powerful executives that are also charming, affable individuals; we see that side of Satoru Iwata and colleagues frequently in Nintendo Direct broadcasts. It'd be wrong to think these are qualities only found within Nintendo, however, as there are a number of other executives well known for similar qualities.

One example is Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida, who is not only prolific in engaging with fans via Twitter — also tweeting his support for small development projects — but also above company rivalries. He's spoken very sensibly about why he wants the Wii U to succeed, for example, while highlighting that he owns two of the systems.

He's also been active on Miiverse on occasion, and in an amusing aside as part of a public event discussing his career with Mark Cerny (reported by Engadget), he admits that he's fallen foul of Miiverse moderators and received two temporary bans.

The first time was because I had my Twitter account in my profile and that's against the rules. The second time is because I wrote, 'I love PS.' You're not supposed to promote a commercial product in MiiVerse, so they correctly interpreted 'PS' as 'PlayStation,'

This was shared with a laugh, we should add, so there's no concern of this becoming a diplomatic incident.

This humble writer has only had one telling off for missing a "spoiler" tag on one occasion, and bizarrely had the word "balls" auto-censored on the Wii Sports Club: Tennis Miiverse functionality. Have you gotten into any trouble on Miiverse?

#276634 Yoshi's New Island Interview with Takashi Tezuka

Posted by Zinix on 10 March 2014 - 08:11 AM in General Gaming

Are the world and its stages entirely new designs, or are aspects of Yoshi’s Island on Super NES revisited?

Tezuka-san: For Yoshi’s New Island, we wanted to make a new world that still kept the warm and friendly vibe of the original Yoshi’s Island on the Super NES. We did this by emphasising the hand-drawn feel of the world such as the parts that look like oil paintings, water colours, or crayon drawings.

Yoshi’s Island was well known for its challenge not so much in terms of completing the game, but in gathering all collectibles in each stage. Is the approach of Yoshi’s New Island similar?

Tezuka-san: We’ve made the courses themselves a little easier to complete compared to the previous title, but we’ve made the collectables – the smiley flowers, red coins and stars – just hard enough to get to make for a nice challenge for more experienced players.

I hope you have fun searching for them all!

#283954 Xbox’s E3 to Focus on Hardcore Gamers, Some News Coming in May and More

Posted by Zinix on 05 May 2014 - 04:57 PM in General Gaming

Phil Spencer, the recently appointed head of the Xbox department at Microsoft, went all out in responding to questions from the fans about E3 on Twitter tonight.

Some of the points he made were quite interesting, and below you can read a summary:

  • Spencer doesn’t think Microsoft will introduce a dedicated handheld gaming device. Instead they’ll work on Windows Phone and tablets, maybe with controller support some day.
  • Spencer wants to make E3′s show more focused on the fans and he’s looking for ideas to make them feel like the conference is for them even if they aren’t in Los Angeles.
  • The main focus will be on hardcore gamers.
  • There was an idea to make Cortana the voice of the show, but Spencer didn’t like it. He likes the Windows Phone feature but doesn’t want to overdo it.
  • Fans won’t have to wait for Tokyo Game Show to see Japanese Xbox games (possibly meaning that we’ll see them at E3).
  • This year Microsoft will show “stuff we are committed to, from top studios, for this year and future.”
  • We’ll get a “couple of things” announced before E3. May “Should be a good month for news.” It took Spencer a month to get the plans set.
  • Spencer has strict orders not to talk about any 343 industries IP before E3.
  • Both new IP and sequels will be announced at this year’s show.
Speaking about Japanese games, Spencer also talked about Lost Odyssey, mentioning that “Rights on that one are a bit complicated,” but that he’d like to see it on Games on Demand. He also stated that there may be opportunities to publish IPs that Microsoft owns but has neglected as digital games.

Finally, he mentioned that what stopped Rare from doing a new Battletoads game is just time. All of their teams are full at the moment, and they have a long list of what they’d like to do next.

One thing is for sure: Phil Spencer has been a busy bee, and it’s hard not to be intrigued about seeing the result of all that work in June. We’re just a little over a month away, and the hype is definitely building up.

#278679 Xbox One: Live Reputation Coming Soon: Rewards Good Players, Punishes Bad Player

Posted by Zinix on 26 March 2014 - 04:46 PM in General Gaming

Last July, I gave you a preview of what to expect with reputation on Xbox One. Gaming has always been a social activity, and for Xbox One we redesigned the Xbox Live community-powered reputation system from Xbox 360 to help better inform players about their behavior in the community.

On Xbox One, there are currently categories of player reputation score – "Green = Good Player," being the large majority of our users, "Yellow = Needs Work" and "Red = Avoid Me." By looking at someone’s Gamercard you’re able to quickly see their reputation. The more hours you play fairly online without being reported as abusive by other players, the better your reputation will be. The algorithm looks to identify players that are repeatedly disruptive across the community on Xbox Live. The vast majority of players do not regularly receive feedback from other players and, thus, will stay at the “Good Player” reputation level.

Here’s what the reputation levels mean for you:

•"Good Players" - The majority of gamers will fall into this level. As we’ve said before, we have plans to introduce rewards for good behavior and look forward to sharing more in the future!
•Warnings for “Needs Work” – Beginning this month, some players will start receiving reputation warnings as their reputations drop due to feedback from the community. The purpose of these communications is to remind players about their effect on the community and encourage them to have more positive interactions. These warnings are based on community feedback collected since Xbox One launched.
•Penalties for “Avoid Me” – If players do not heed warnings and continue to have a negative impact on other players and the Xbox Live community, they will begin to experience penalties. For example, people with an “Avoid Me” rating will have reduced matchmaking pairings and may be unable to use certain privileges such as Twitch broadcasting.

Remember, we designed the algorithm so it won’t penalize you for bad reports over a few weeks of play. The system also adjusts for false reports from people that might intentionally report someone of greater skill or for other griefing purposes.

At the end of the day, our goal is to match you with other gamers you’ll enjoy, and create the best gaming community online. Visit the Xbox Live Policy and Enforcement page for more details on the Xbox One reputation system.

#282640 XBOX ONE Production Could Temporarily Cease

Posted by Zinix on 26 April 2014 - 07:53 AM in General Gaming

Too much supply and not enough demand

Microsoft has revealed its financial results for the third quarter of fiscal 2014. During an investor call, the company reported that there was a gross revenue of $20.4 billion for the period of January 1 to March 31, 2014 with a net income of $5.66 billion, Gamasutra reported. While the Xbox One was not the primary topic of discussion, implications were made that XBOX ONE production might cease or slow down in the coming months.

According to Microsoft, 1.2 million XBOX ONE consoles were shipped globally in addition to 800,000 XBOX 360s within the third quarter. Last week, Microsoft had announced that five million XBOX ONES had been sold to retailers but didn’t provide any numbers as to how many of those consoles were sold to consumers.

While the XBOX ONE has seen impressive sales numbers, Microsoft revealed back in January that three million units had been sold to consumers, there are units just sitting on store shelves. To deal with the inventory surplus Microsoft CFO Amy Hood said, during the investor call, “We do expect to work through some inventory in Q4.”

In that same call, however, she also referred to, “channel inventory drawdown for XBOX consoles” which could mean a halt to production or slowdown of production until the stock currently sitting on shelves has been sold by retailers.

But will Microsoft slow or halt production of its XBOX ONE console so that retailers can sell through its inventory?

#291336 Xbox One Japan launch- consoles sold out "in no time"

Posted by Zinix on 23 June 2014 - 12:05 PM in General Gaming

http://xboxonedaily....out-in-no-time/
Having been made available for pre-order at Japanese retailers only some 48 hours ago, we’re already seeing the Day One edition sell out across several popular retailers. Given the brand’s less-than-monumental success in the region, it’s easy to say that this launch is already shaping up to be a successful one.As she is know for doing, the manager of popular independent games retailer Games Ma-Ya has given incite into her business operations, stating via her blog that the Day One edition of the Xbox One should out very quickly at her shop. A translated excerpt reads as follows:Pre-orders of the Xbox One started today, and the limited Day One Edition Sold Out in no time. If the Xbox fans continue at this rate, the console will keep going like this. If it continues doing well, customers will be interested in the normal edition as well.I think that Microsoft has been generous with the content of the limited edition in order to expand sales in Japan.
