#317180 What games would make the NX launch successful?

Posted by grahamf on 08 November 2015 - 05:32 PM in General Gaming

But honestly we really need a proper Zelda and Mario 3D game, and probably a Splatoon sequel. At launch. Not having a decent lineup at the launch of the Wii U had a pretty bad impact on it. It would also be great if Nintendo could work with some of the more famous indys to port their games over, like Undertale.

And Metroid.

I ordered a new gaming laptop, a Lenovo Y40-80. I was getting tired of my compromise.

#316709 Why is there no Reset button?

Posted by grahamf on 24 August 2015 - 06:05 AM in Wii U Hardware

The reset button doesn't even work consistently on the Wii. The three or so times my Wii U locked up not even the power button did snything.

It makes sense on older consoles where the power and reset buttons physically cut power, but not on newer ones that rely on ACPI or something.

#317056 If you were in charge on Nintendo...

Posted by grahamf on 17 October 2015 - 08:02 PM in Wii U Hardware

I want a Cucco gun in Zelda.

But in all seriousness:

1. Try to ensure the long-term access to the chip architecture. We don't want to lose decades of games because a licensing issue forces Nintendo to drop their backwards compatibility and start from scratch.

2. Improve network services. Maybe have multiple tiers where a free one gives us what we have now (including multiplayer) and have one (or two) advanced tires that give use features like cloud game save syncing and voice chat (no matter what you think, I believe this would at least be considered to keep Nintendo's family friendly status.

3. Add games to the Virtual Console faster. It is currently possible to run most Gamecube and n64 games as-is on the Wii U (and some hackers have figured out how to put standard n64 roms inside the emulator package downloaded from the eShop). I'd start a beta program where users can play beta games and report any and all bugs found.

4. Either make Gamecube ports a standard feature or launch a new bluetooth Wavebird that is 100% identical and is supported indefinitely. Maybe give it a USB connection so the extreme gamers are happy

5. I'd like to launch a Nintendo Dynasty game collection. The general idea is that all games in the series are modular, where characters from one game can be played in another while using a map from a third game. You would buy individual games (such as Mario Bros, Kirby, Yoshi, etc) and each new game can be added to the mix and mashed up. Like if you bought a bunch of different lego packs and mixed them together.

#318072 Keeping the forum going

Whelp, I've been gone since April and only four topics (with only two that count). I only came back because I was looking for a rant I posted somewhere.

k. I'm just tired of hearing people complain about how this site doesn't have activity while not wanting to move. Now I do like and appreciate the efforts of Sorceror and Dr. Wario. Dr. Wario's site is now my main one.

is Dr. Wario the guy behind nintendoforums?

Eh, the Wii U only has about a year left as a dominant console. Might as well switch to a more generic site that covers all the Nintendo consoles without being overwhelming.

#317344 Thoughts on Linkle

Posted by grahamf on 26 November 2015 - 07:48 PM in General Gaming

A game with both of them would be interesting but seems like a considerably more difficult concept to pull off so I'm not so sure they'd go that route.

...How? Literally nothing changes. All Nintendo has to do is allow you to pick your gender when you pick your name. Sure they could have a proper character customization thing, but having any changes to the story would be completely optional depending on how it is written (for example: in Twilight princess Telma's flirting will work though a little scandalous, but the scene where Link and Mayor Bo share knowing glances while Ilia yells at them would work better if the mayor and Ilia's genders were reversed). But literally 95% of all Zelda games' stories work just as well as is if you pretend Link was female.

Maybe you can have a story where Link and Linkle are fraternal twins and the one you choose becomes the hero while the other takes on NPC roles throughout the story. (Imagine a conversation between Link and Linkle)

#316615 Windows 10

Posted by grahamf on 15 August 2015 - 12:05 PM in The Café

Screen rotates upside down when I put my "tablet" in portrait mode...

Also, this is not a bug, but I can't seem to find a windows 10 compatible driver for Splendid Utility, it stopped working properly in W 10, but supposedly Asus updated it with a fix but I didn't get anything...

Do you have a Book Flip? I have the TP500LN and have the rotation isue.

Not sure about Splendid, I did a clean reinstall and I did not put Splendid back on.

#316628 Windows 10

Posted by grahamf on 16 August 2015 - 05:57 AM in The Café

If you reinstall smart gesture it fixes that, I had that issue for a while.

But after you do that, you can still access your Elan settings.

I'll try that. I think I had uninstalled it as it overrode my custom Elan settings (tap disabled, right corner set to left click, two finger right click, three finger middle click)

EDIT: Yep. I'm stuck with the limited Asus settings. I'm uninistalling it again as I can easily hit fn+f9 if it bothers me.

#316633 Windows 10

Posted by grahamf on 16 August 2015 - 01:33 PM in The Café

You can't if the keyboard is disabled :)

How long does the battery on yours last? And have you noticed the speakers being too quiet?

The batterry can last up to five or more hours at best case, but I usually keep it plugged in. I don't find the speakers that bad, but I had to get USB headphones because my audio jack is rainbow.

#316638 Windows 10

Posted by grahamf on 17 August 2015 - 05:57 AM in The Café

Oh, if you set one of the settings to "live" in realtek audio settings it makes them a lot louder.

The problem is that the jack outputs 50% noise. Any attempts at fixing it just amps up the noise.

#316619 Windows 10

Posted by grahamf on 15 August 2015 - 04:02 PM in The Café

I have the same exact computer actually... i3 processor and 720p screen, correct?

EDIT: I lied... Mine is the TP500LA.

I have the i5 and Nvidia 840m, with 15" 1366x768 screen. I tried to get a version with the SSD cache but I couldn't find one, so I upgraded the drive to a 1TB Hybrid.

Aside from the rotation problem, Windows 10 works wonderfully on this laptop. It even replaced the Asus driver with an Elan version that gives me better control - though it means that FlipLock can't disable it anymore.

Maybe add a 3DS section? It would be nice to talk about the Mario&Luigi: Paper jam game that comes out in a few hours (It's predownloaded and the OS says it came out today but the game refuses to launch and says it's too early.)

#317907 NX controller possibly leaked - looks almost exactly like the patent

I'm on the fence. It's weird, but Nintendo weird. A more square screen makes more sense, but would be a little boring. There's nothing that looks remotely like it, which would get people to take notice. It's not exactly impossible using current tech, but it has very few physical buttons.

#317912 NX controller possibly leaked - looks almost exactly like the patent

Posted by grahamf on 21 March 2016 - 04:33 PM in General Gaming

Or it's an early prototype. Have you even noticed the aspect ratio of that screen? If it was a rectangle it would be about 4:1 or 5:1. Name one game or system that supports that ratio. No doubt the Unreal Demo doesn't support it either, so they just set it to widescreen and then crop. Yes, the analog sticks do not move, which is a clear sign that this is an EARLY PROTOTYPE. Analog sticks don't need to be tested as heavily; everyone knows how they work and Nintendo will just use the Wii U's anyways. This appears to be made specifically for testing the curved screen itself. How it holds up to use, how the capacitive layer responds, how the system handles outputting such a high-resolution video to a SECONDARY display. Joysticks are irrelevant. Nintendo simply cannot just "craft it out of clay or hollow shells" specifically because of the free-form display. They need to know how it reacts when held as intended, and how well the materials hold up. There's no point in skipping forward to a more complex prototype only to find out that the display tech is unreliable or that the console itself needs to be redesigned to handle it. Just look at that bezel, this thing is 90% screen with 9.9% going towards the white bar below the screen. I dare you to say that it is not an engineering feat which needs to be proven.

Cropping does scream fake because the whole point of the second screen is to have the whole image as a second experience. Not Screen shape obscuring your view. THE ANALOG STICKS DO NOT MOVE.

AAlso they never construct a functioning prototype until they have a design they want to move forward with. Rest of the the time they sculpt it out of clay or hollow shells. THEY NEVER give those shells to developers in kits and certainly do not have functioning screens. Oh and the guy who posted this on Reddit has a shady story.

Also yes it screams fake

Just look at the prototype. Imagine it is real, then ask yourself what issues may arise. Those issues are what they are testing. They are not writing games for it yet - anything would just be a demo to finalize the hardware like they did with the Wii U and Zelda. They are finalizing the hardware. I doubt that the console's CPU and GPU are even done yet. The team in charge of designing the interface and APIs are probably still relying on an computer with a mask over the video.

Also, You're comparing an iPad's LCD screen to whatever this thing uses, which would NOT have the same type of "moire." That also requires the picture to be a lot clearer to see. This screen could be only 480px tall and we wouldn't be able to tell.

Ok. If it's fake, then give one logical reason why the person who mocked this up did such a realistic job only to have obviously fake joysticks.

I suspect that they may actually be real joysticks, but a new kind that is a cross between Pro controller joysticks and the circle pads - with an integrated rubberised boot to keep out dirt and grime.

#317910 NX controller possibly leaked - looks almost exactly like the patent

Posted by grahamf on 21 March 2016 - 02:10 PM in General Gaming

It's BS. Analog sticks are part of the mold and do not move. Look close. The pic is a cropped picture of the Unreal Engine 4 demo. Cropped instead of making it fit the screen so that's another red flag. Never do patents look like the final product even the Wii U gamepad one was not the final product. The patent also has handles. The patent is not showing the controller anyway but the free form display concept so another flag. What we have here is a 3d printed model with a cropped image PS or pasted on it or both but either way everything on this screams a fake.

1. Depending on the stage of the test cropping vs fitting may be irrelevant. This is probably just a technical test of the display, in which case the video would be over scanning anyways. They will have to ensure that all GUI elements are visible in the actual game, as internally the layout would be assuming a rectangular display.

2. This is a prototype. It's possible this is exactly what Nintendo had in mind when they wrote the patent, or they are using the patent design as a basic shape for testing. Handles can be skipped if the prototype is a technical test and not an ergonomic test. For the free-form display, which is what the patent is for.

It does not "scream" fake, but it clearly still needs work.

#317774 Even more TP footage...yuck

Posted by grahamf on 30 January 2016 - 01:22 AM in Wii U Games and Software

Eh, as long as it's not buggy I'm happy. I've watched the videos and I still don't see what the problem is. Yes, there are games that look nicer than it. But this is still a decent game. Complaining about it won't do much, except maybe reducing the launch price (I'll admit I won't pay 75 Canuckistan Pesos for this)
