According to IGN, the Wii U will get an update day one which adds the Miiverse software, so It's not pre-installed after all.

It's redundant for it to not be pre-installed...

is not only miiverse:

We don't know much more about this update, only that it will add Miiverse, Wii U Chat (the system's 'real time communication' application), Nintendo TVii and the system's eShop. We are supposed to get access to these programs shortly before the system's launch through an upcoming system update - the same update Wii U owners will have to install in order to gain access to these features as well.

all the "online part" of the wii u will be added in that patch

so for now, ign can only play the games to review them and nothing more :P

Ah you beat me to it Tricky! Anyways, here's the full details http://gonintendo.co...story&id=189787

MiiVerse, Online Play, Tvii, Chat and the eShop will have to be added through a day one update.

I find this pointless, it just tacks on the amount of time for console set up ( settings, creating Mii's, Wii system transfer...) before we can dig in to an actual game. I remember the 3DS having a day one update, but it was just to add a demo video for OK Go and tried to fix the black screen glitch.

I don't find this pointless. They do this because they know that not everyone will use the Wii U online features.

A very non-nintendo thing to do, but I guess it makes sense. Still, it is strange. I wish we knew more about it.

lol...
But its cool. I dont mind an update on launch day as long as its not big like 2-3gb. And hopefully there updates will be smooth and not like ps3 updating every few days kicking you offline.
Im also willing ot bet that 3rd shipment of the wii u will probably not need this update, as this is probably a main update because the system was probably rushed a lil.

This doesn't sound like a problem to me, I'll just play my 3DS while I wait for the system to update and add everything.

Could be security related. To keep details under wraps in case someone gets the console early.

Not a big deal, I love the setting up process. Plus I have pretty fast internet so it's cool. I think I have 25 mbps up/down, and get usually get speeds of around 2.5 MB/s on wireless downloads, wired is faster of course. :P

It's probably just part of the process of adding your Wii U Console to the network.

I wonder why Nintendo didn't just pre-load it into the console? Reason to connect to the Internet I presume?

Considering these features require internet to be useful I would instead say its just so Gaming News Sites don't leak info first.

Lol exactly that way Nintendo can say next E3 "Nintendo has the highest percentage of consoles connected to the internet" and make themselves feel like a bad ass

I don't see how this logic even works... First off why would you not have you system connected to the internet and people who plan on not using internet features on the wiiu wouldn't care about miiverse or wiiu chat ,etc since they already know those are internet features .

Not my logic; Nintendos, they made a big deal about how their consoles had the highest percentage of being connected to the internet, i was merely stating that by having miiverse be a mandatory download from the internet they could retain that stat that they for some reason pride themselves in

Hardcore player reads this and says: "Yes! None of that casual crap :D" Then he sees that to play online and to get the eShop you need this update and this is his reaction: F&%#!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I shower you with coconut cream pies.

It just shows that Nintendo is looking out for us before we even get the consoles home. Some people have issues with things the day they get them, and nothing is done until everyone and their mom complains about it. I'd rather have a patch day one than have some kinda dumb issue that prevents things from working properly for a while.
