"If we have to sell hardware we will," co-founder and MD Newell told Penny Arcade. "We have no reason to believe we're any good at it; it's more we think that we need to continue to have innovation, and if the only way to get these kind of projects started is by us going and developing and selling the hardware directly then that's what we'll do."

"I would push them very hard to stop thinking of themselves as being a platform for everything that already exists and start betting on the inventiveness and the benefits that you would get by embracing a more open approach to the internet and game delivery and game business models and things like that."

I did not expect this, If Valve does join the console race I'd be shocked.

If that were so, would it be the end of Steam on PC and the possibility of it being on Wii U?

If they do this and keep their games exclusive to their new system then they will not see a penny from me.

No, Gabe said if they have to, they'll make hardware because Microsoft and the others are making their consoles too closed to developers.

Worth mentioning one of the most hardcore gaming companies is saying they want you to wear the controller on your body.

Yeah, that's why I think Valve should stay 3rd party.

I really think they should stick to being Third party. Hopefully they will think the new consoles will be good enough for them to not to pursue such a thing at this time. But we have to wait and see.

Yeah, you've done a great job so far, letting the Metal Heads destroy the palace.

... If that console were to fail, it would be a major hit to Valve in general, and I don't want such talented devs to die D:

They're actually making more money per employee than Google and Apple, so...I don't see why they would go for a console just yet. The PC seems to be treating them just fine.

Guys, I think you have it wrong. They said they'd join the console race if there was no innovation. Nintendo's always trying to innovate, and thus making other companies have to make they're own innovation to compete. So I don't think they're saying the will, they're just saying that if we just play the same old stuff on the same old system, they'll come out with something new and fresh.

Definitely an interesting idea, but I think the next gen consoles should be good enough on their own.

I, for one, still like the idea of one standardized console format, so there would be no need for cross-platform software.
