Sorry about that. xP I get kinda on-edge in this topic. o-o;

I somewhat agree. If Sony had stuck with some older franchises, they may have gotten a better install base/sale rate. However, I still say it was price of system + games + extra controllers that mattered much more than IPs here.

Yeah, just a combination of everything.

Wow, that was quite a good video. Loved the commentary.
I still believe that a very huge portion of SONY's supposed misfortune came from the ridiculously high price the PS3 started off with.

Eh, let's compare for arguing sake. Even if I'm wrong, I want to see where this goes.

I tried to compare the graphics as evenly as possible (tried to remember/find games that had very well-done graphical capabilities for the systems in full 3D) and...it's close. I honestly think that PS2 - PS3 seems to be a much, much larger jump, but it's still close. Oh wells. :P

I don't think PS1 graphics were as good as you remember them. In motion they do look very very dated, the textures are horribly pixelated and there's pretty much no anti-aliasing on anything. PS2 was a massive step-up compared to it.

PS1:

PS2:

It's kind of hard to demonstrate with low quality video since it kind of blurs the jagged edges and such on the PS1, but they're definitely there. In addition PS2 improved a hell of a lot with animations and sound quality. PS3's gigantic leap was HD resolution more than anything, for graphics/sound it was pretty much standard fare in terms of the progression from PS2.

I would have bought a PS3 on launch, but I wasn't going to shell out $600 for a game console. I bought a Wii instead. They should have lowered the capabilities of the system to lower the price. They also shouldn't have taken out the good operating system installation feature. That was kind of a major feature to have for a console - to take it out was a step back.

Don't forget Blu-Ray player prices were really high when the PS3 launched about $500+ were the cheap ones.

Sony kinda forgot what they're PlayStation fanbase wanted, they wanted all of Sony's first party/exclusives from the PS1 and PS2 days but Sony just made new IP's, some good/great while some where bad, also Sony thought all of the PS fanbase would buy a PS3 of course and the other people who bought the PS2 would go to the PS3 even if it cost $600, clearly that backfired on Sony.

Launching the PS3 at $600 ( Insane for any gaming console), launching the Vita at $250 ( The price the 3DS failed with) and probably needed more security ( PSN Hacks). Really nothing else in my opinion.
