#309408 So... What other Wii Games are we to expect in the VC?

Posted by Marcus on 21 February 2015 - 05:49 PM in Wii U Games and Software

I too want gamecube games. It'd mean I could finally get rid of my Wii. The only reason I hang onto that thing is for Mario Sunshine and Skies of Arcadia.

After that, as many Wii games as possible that use the classic controller. I use the Wii U gamepad as a screen a lot so that's best for me. Last Story would be good. If they release Xenoblade Chronicles I'll be annoyed as that's the main reason I bought the new 3DS.

#309407 Bayonetta 2 Sales

Posted by Marcus on 21 February 2015 - 05:43 PM in Wii U News

It's sitting at 630,000 sales now. Add digital to that and it's probably around 750,000 (not exactly sure what percentage is digital).

I imagine that's probably considered a success for them. Compared to the sales of the original which was targeting platforms that had much larger install bases, this is pretty good.

Hopefully we'll see a 3rd.

I will definitely buy this eventually. It wasn't at the top of my last because I'm just not very good at combo-based action games

Bayonetta 2 doesn't really require you to be good at combos. Not unless you're wanting to try the highest level stuff. Your dodge-timing is far more valuable.

Lololol "it's good but I'm offended".

My impression of Bayonetta was that the character was supposed to be pro-woman but the camera was supposed to be pro-perv. Seemed like a fair balance.

#309401 Get your hopes up about Zelda Wii U and Xenoblade X, but not too much (imo)

I would never have noticed they changed it with wind waker. You got any comparison shots or anything that demonstrate the difference?

Lol, that's awesome. Good job! They completely won me over with the excessive bloom in Wind Waker too. To start with it looked a bit much. But it does somehow look good when you're playing.

Pretty easy really.

1) Mario Kart 8- The best Mario Kart imo. The tracks are great, it looks incredible and DLC tracks is an awesome addition.

2) Super Mario 3D World- Very safe for a 3D Mario game. But perfectly weighted platforming with varied and creative levels. It's pure mindless fun.

3) Wind Waker HD- A Zelda is needed for every home console. This isn't the best and imo the sparsity of the ocean works against the pacing of the story (which is otherwise good). It'll do until we get the big Zelda we're all waiting for.

#309352 Official Xenoblade Information Thread

Posted by Marcus on 20 February 2015 - 05:10 PM in Wii U Games and Software

I'd seriously doubt this'll end up being 60fps. Look how insane and huge the world is. Must be pushing the Wii U quite far. I doubt they'd sacrifice other concerns for framerate in this genre.

The example I posted was a curvature/perspective example. The distances between the bottles were all exactly the same. The only thing that changed was the fov, which means if you use the wrong fov in calculations for measuring distance using a the known height of an object (the bottle), your calculations will be off exponentially the more distance you try and measure.

In order to make any concrete measurements, you would actually need at least one, certified, official, measurement of a known object.

I cant tell exactly what the fov is, though I can tell its considerably greater than 60, which Nintendo used for Zelda until ww (gc ww). I am very good at identifying fov's with pc games, but thats because they are designed for 60 degree fov (thanks ps360), so when you slide it way past that to 120, you get some serious frustum/fish eye distortion, although you become a god and people think you have eyes in the back of your head. As long as you stay away from scopes.... (Why do so many studios have problems with this? Change the fov for scopes, they are scopes! Thats what they do!).

Here are my approximations on fov for 3d Zelda games

oot-ww 60 degrees
tp gc 60 degrees
tp wii- 80 degrees (I recall them being very pleased with this in an interview, perhaps an Iwata asks? or perhaps a lecture... The increase was simply do due to wideescreen support)
ss wii 60 degrees (I recall them being less than satisfied with this)
wwhd ==100 degrees (They were so pleased by the increased fov, that they actually bothered to rework the game a bit around it, like moving npc's)
Zelda U ==100 degrees

I know the original Xenoblade also had a fov of around 80 or 90, it doesnt seem to adjust well during gameplay when you zoom in, which made zooming in right on the characters and trying to play like that really awkward.

I would never have noticed they changed it with wind waker. You got any comparison shots or anything that demonstrate the difference?

#309301 Aonuma says Zelda Wii U will push the hardware to its limits

Posted by Marcus on 19 February 2015 - 07:56 PM in Wii U Games and Software

Actually it's kinda funny. Sony is talking about removing it's TV brand and smartphones. Downsizing even more. Sony is selling buildings. PS brand only thing making profit right now. Sony has closed doen studio's and sold  off SOE.

Nintendo already owns Seattle Mariners to the make money there and now expanding to QOL. Nintendo built a new HQ and gave Intelligent Systems a new building to work in. Retro moved into a much larger studio. Monolith has two studios.

At this rate Sony will only have PlayStation while Nintendo will continue to expand and adapt.

Does any of that affect the gaming at all though? It could. But maybe not, depending on how well they compartmentalise their businesses.

The souls games really werent that difficult.

Ha! Speak for yourself. Some bosses took me about 20 attempts.

#309298 Motion controls won’t be a requirement for Star Fox Wii U

Feels like we should've got some video footage of this game by now. He did say it was coming out before Zelda.

#309267 Would you like Nintendo to get into VR again?

Posted by Marcus on 19 February 2015 - 12:42 PM in General Gaming

I think Nintendo should just wait and see what happens with VR. It could be a game changer. It could end up being a temporary fad like motion controls.

It's important to remember that it's a tiny tiny percentage that cause problems. They just stick out more!

Darksiders is awesome.

I love Darksiders too. Heavily underappreciated series. Look at the Darksiders 2 sales on Wii U, they're abysmal.

Lololol that's quite the encyclopedic answer. Sorry to disappoint but I did already understand what field of view is. It's the last part I'm specifically questioning. So yes, I think you're right. Although the example you gave with the bottles was perhaps slightly bad as it was focusing on the perspective due to distance, more than curvature which seems to be the main issue here?

So I guess that width of the ledge, that is already an incredibly speculative method in itself, will change slightly based on the fov. Do you have actual evidence that they're using 100 though? I really can't tell myself. I can tell that main Zelda preview is higher than Darksiders. It's very hard to tell from the recent preview footage though! I suppose it's possible to reverse engineer if you make some calculations in-game. I'm sure someone's into doing that.

#309221 How A Zelda Dungeon Is Made

Look there's no secret to what makes a good Zelda Dungeon, it takes plenty of patience and creative ideas.

Haha it also takes specific ideas.

#309215 Legend of Kay Getting Remastered for Wii U , PC

Posted by Marcus on 18 February 2015 - 07:12 PM in Wii U Games and Software

On the US side I can't find it in search anymore however it's still in my wishlist and if I click that the listing shows up. Might just be off the grid so to speak until official info is updated.

Mmmmm yeah, info on the internet seems to find its way into the public somehow. Either way, I hope the prices being mentioned here are the final prices and not some placeholder. I'll almost definitely buy this if it comes at budget price. Assuming they've actually remastered it of course. A direct port, maybe not.

Right, but you can't really compare Sony and Nintendo. Sony do a lot of other things. And their problems are largely with those other things. The PS4 is probably their single most valuable business. Whereas Nintendos is sadly their handheld (not that sad, I like both)

#309186 Aonuma says Zelda Wii U will push the hardware to its limits

With the size this world supposedly is I can't see a whole new zelda with a whole new world being developed before the end of the wii u's life cycle.

Which makes me wonder since we usually get two zelda games per generation, does WWHD count as one or instead of a second game will we see a new story in the form of large-scale DLC a couple of years down the line?

Yeah, I'd seriously doubt we'll get another on the Wii U. Just consider the 3 we've had on the 3DS as compensation!

#309152 What do you want (or expect) the next home console to be?

Posted by Marcus on 17 February 2015 - 05:47 PM in Wii U Hardware

And then EA and the like throttle down the PC version so that the console versions are "Competitive"

Ha, I've got a mediocre gaming PC. I'm happily unaffected. Although some incidents like Dark Souls PC port are just ridiculous.

No it wasn't.  It was fine plus got fast travel mid game.  It was slower to travel as young link in OoT or on horseback in TP.  Just people don't understand how sailing works that whatever way the wind blows you go faster. They made the game easier for people complaining an easy game is to hard.  No matter where the wind is go faster. There was a lot to discover in WW ocean and it was at the perfect speed to let you do so.

I'm pretty sure everyone understood how sailing worked. I even used the sale-pumping trick that speedrunners use. I still found it a nightmare. Just having to change the wind direction was annoying. And if you look at the various reviews for the game, the swift sail was pretty much universally acknowledged as a great addition.

I still can't figure out for the life of me Why Microsoft and sony went with x86..

To close the difference with the PC gaming, which has had a massive explosion of popularity?

#309147 Aonuma says Zelda Wii U will push the hardware to its limits

and I think that the fast sailing might have been a test to see how much the new hardware was capable of loading at certain speeds

Lol I'm more inclined to think that the fast sailing was because the game was a nightmare without it. Could be both of course!

I'll have to give it a go I guess to see how it plays out. Even watching videos, it's a bit hard to grasp the pacing.

Part of it will just come down to how quick you are as a player.I felt that the fact that you can't necessarily see what the enemy is doing is an interesting design approach, but makes the experience feel less fluid. Felt like a lot of starting and stopping.

The gameplay seems fast paced enough and I think I will have fun using the FE amiibo too.

From my demo playthrough, that seemed to be exactly what the gameplay wasn't. Much more slow and methodical than Fire Emblem, which seems to be the obvious comparison for turn based strategy.
