i use one of these a WD 320GB USB one http://goo.gl/FM6IT it is very small & fits nice on top of the wii u you will also need a Y cable to connect it to the wii u to get enough power http://goo.gl/OFHov it is the same with many external HD's for the wii u so don't worry about using a Y cable.

i was shocked when i read your post. i have the same external HD & it doesn't work with regular cable or with the y cable. please any advice it will be welcomed

It's simple the 350 gig wd also known as a passport drive wont work unless you have a usb hub connected to the wii u the y splitter only works on certain drives this is why i recommend the wd mybook essential 2 tb its 128.00 it works with the wii u no issues powers off when the console powers off no sleep mode works flawless with the wii u

Where have you got it plugged in ?

I have it plugged in the the rear ports.

I just plugged it in with a Y lead & it works, what Y lead do you have ?

You don't need a USB hub or anything.

His hardware is probably defective, it should have no issues with a Y Cable.
