It's a question I had in mind since the immediately announced the system, will the WiiU support DVD playback... as well as Blu Ray? Sure, Nintendo said in the past few years that they dont want a big multi-media console but... will their mind change now?

I honestly bet they will. Since ps3 already has that option of entertainment, Nintendo would have to do something to match up in that category. If not, they could be missing out. In terms of blue ray, maybe. I honestly don't know at the moment. Since Sony makes blu ray, I am not positive they would be up to contributing to a console that could in terms, make their device crumble in sales. So in other words, I honestly don't know what they are going to end up doing!

No, it's been confirmed Wii U does NOT have BluRay playback functionality. DVD playback would be like... no extra work for the developers, so I don't see why not. But in all honesty, I wouldn't be surprised if they make their own media format.

There is no need for DVD playback. 2011, everyone can play a DVD on something in their house.

It won't support blu-ray. They will do things like Netflix to stream videos.

from iwataasks (miyamoto): "Yeah, I think so. I want to make it a machine where it's fully leveraged in the household. I hope it becomes something where people won't be able to imagine life without it".

well, that wouldnt make that much sense if it wouldnt support it, just sayin...

It is a video console. It is not a dvd/blu ray player. Sony did not make blu ray. A group of companies made blu ray and sony is just one of the 40 something companies. With that said, I just want it to play video games. I don't need a multiplayer. I hardly use what I have now. Quality comes from the system doing its main design which is playing video games.

I'm confident I read somewhere that they are going to be creating their own format of compact disc.

I don't even remember the last time I watched a dvd if i'm honest... For me whether or not it plays DVD's is completely irrelevant.
Besides that, they are going to use their own format once again, 25gb discs of some sorts.

I doubt it.

Nintendo isn't likely to spend the extra amount in licensing fees that would allow DVD or Blu-Ray to be played.

I should hope the Wii U would have 15 year old technology.

It will probably be like the Wii.

It will have the physical capacity to play Blu-Rays. (Blu-Ray laser) But it will need special software in order to decode it properly. (Obtained through homebrew)

alright but people have dvd players, or a computer, laptop, xbox/ps, even digital tv boxes sometimes come with dvd players.
+ having a separate dvd player means some1 can be playing a game on the Wii U while some1 else watches a dvd :D

As u say, the average family watches dvd's which implies they already have something set up that is able to play the dvd's.

Yes. I don't want to have to turn off my Wii U to watch movies. Its all about convenience. Besides, imagine how cool it would be to be able to watch movies on the Wii U padtroller while someone else uses the TV.

Fair point I guess, and I guess there's no actual downside to adding dvd support. I still wouldn't use it though :D

DVD playback would be pointless in my opinion.

I could care less, but I guess it'd be a fine addition.
