I don't even remember the last time I watched a dvd if i'm honest... For me whether or not it plays DVD's is completely irrelevant.
Besides that, they are going to use their own format once again, 25gb discs of some sorts.

I bet that Nintendo's custom format is a derivative of HD-DVD, like the Wii and GameCube were derivatives of DVD. So someone might hack something together that lets it play HD-DVD's - as if anyone has any HD-DVD movies, anyway. I know that a homebrew DVD player ended up coming out for the Wii, in any case.

This is true but nintendo released a newer version of the dvd drive inside the wii killing dvd playback making it impossible for new wiis to play dvds.If a homebrew program is made for the wiiu to play dvds then nintendo will once again make a newer dvd drive to stop it.In the end it may support it (it would save devs the time in making homebrew app to do it) and it may not.I think it won't.

no, if they use their own video format (which they will) then there won't be DVD playback and especially not blue-ray

I hope so. There's no reason not to at least include DVD support. I have lots of DVD movies to watch, having to use my PS3 just so I can watch it is not cool.

i agree it's ridiculous that nintendo won't allow DvD/Blu-ray player in their console. having to many devices is such a pain. and having one to play games,movies and more would have been better.
