Sakamoto has said that the Prime series is classified as a side-story, and is indeed 100% canonical. (and I thnk he did oversee their development some; he just wasn't majorly involved in them.)

So, basically, they do indeed exist in the same world as the rest of the series, but they are a separate story line from the main series (all numbered games + Other M), and are supposed to take place between Metroid and Metroid 2.

Hmm. What qualifies as a 'cutscene'? Would the parts in Halo in which you are riding in a Pelican and can only look around count as part of a 'cutscene'?

I think Cutscenes include the automatic movements of characters whilst still in the game interface. They just add black to the top and bottom and change the camera angle to make it more dramatic (?)

Kid Icarus Uprising. It isn't going to feel as dated as other titles you may have recently played. Ocarina of Time only holds for nostalgic purposes.
