I’m not saying rewards are bad, I’m saying you can divide them into two categories – some are like foods that are naturally beneficial and can increase your life, these are the 'real accomplishemts' Im lamenting about being an endangered species. But most today are like drugs. This is where most acheivments fit in.

Game designers have been told by publishers, now controlled by marketers, that making food is too hard, and requires too much time and talent. So instead they resort to drugs all the time. Because they know they can get people to buy it and get hooked on it, if they market it enough. Theyve gotten so good theyve been able to monetize the 'drugs' alone as a new business model 'free to play'.

The meaning behind modern game design is you’re some schmo that doesn’t have anything better to do than sit around pressing a button and killing imaginary monsters. It doesn’t matter if you’re smart or how adept you are, it’s just how much time you sink in. You don’t need to do anything exceptional, you just need to run the treadmill like everyone else. Just stay on the treadmill, do what youre told, get acheivements that tell you how great you are for doing nothing.
