So squeenix is showing off their topographic map, with drawn grid squares. 6 X 5, plus a handful of halves, and added on areas. for probably a total of about 35 units. Most likely kilometers.

Its a topographical concept map, so its likely that it is the whole game world.
At 35 kilometers squared it would be comparable to oblivion or gta san andreas in size.

A lot of it seems impassable and just let you explore certain areas giving you the illusion it's bigger than it actually is in game.

Yeah, I have no idea how much is going to be accessible in game, but its pretty common to use mountainous terrain to wall off game area from non interactive scenery.
