Well I'm guessing the 3DS is only a controller because Sakurai knew people with the 3DS version would have got used to the controller.

The gamepad has no use really, you tab the screen to switch between off tv mode or showing the percentage of your characters, as for the controls, it's EXACTLY like the pro contoroller.

Okay, sounds good. I may pick it up tomorrow along with a Samus amiibo... Maybe I can get people to play with me if I have two good controllers. :P
