Only two consoles even have a LIFETIME mark of over 30 million sales in Japan (DS and GB).

I'm sure the sales will sky-rocket once SSB is announced, or released. And some other games too, like Wind Waker HD will boost up sales.
Smash Bros. is a long way off so they can't rely on that.

30 million by the end of 2013 is essentially impossible

MH3U was a launch game though. And yea, ports generally aren't gonna boost sales significantly.
Yeah and not that one as it stands. I have a feeling that MH:U's sales are going to be absolutely awful in the West. I'll be shocked if the Wii U gets MH4 in the West. I'm just hoping that people buy MH:U on 3DS, so the West has a chance for localization of MH4 on 3DS.

As for the Wii U, I don't know what kind of games Japan got, but I assume they are pretty much the same titles we got for the most part. And, for the most part, the Wii U doesn't have a game that says "We have to buy a Wii U". Nintendo Land, NSMBU and ZombiU are not the greatest sellers. That said, these results are more or less the Japanese audience gearing up for the future. These aren't a reflection of the current games available, IMO.

OUCH. Lol. I still have no intention of getting one at this point, and this doesn't change that. Nintendo should have known to have better titles at launch than New Super Mario Bros. Version 1.3.
Nsmb never sold up front.
It was laughed as a failure when it first released to sales of less than (all numbers na numbers only) 150k in its first week, which quickly dropped and remained below 100k after 4 weeks....
Except it kept selling at that same modest amount for years and years... Until it sold over 30 million units.
NSMB is a slow burn, not a quick flash. Nintendo knew exactly what they wanted when the released a nsmbu at launch...
To week 1 sales of over 250k. at 3 million consoles sold world wide, 1.5 million of them, half of all wii u owners in the world, have nsmbu. That is a higher attach than any other game in the series... and they ALL went on to sell over 20 million ltd.
Nsmbu will continue to sell slowly over the course of the systems life until it amasses another ridiculous number, like the rest of its predecessors. And the way nsmb sells, the longer its out, the more it keeps on selling, slow and steady.
Nintendo knows exactly what they are doing selling nsmbu at launch.
