Probably just trying to stop SK from making a sequel themselves. It's for the best.
Highly unlikely, Silicon Knights I thought dispersed after the x-men debacle. Their website hasn't been updated since 2011.

3Dude actually pointed this out in the "What is Retro Studios Working on?" thread.
Also noted that its the fifth time they extend it so nothing particularly interesting.
Could be that they've been waiting for an HD console with more realistic graphics to release a sequel though.

They've done this before, last time was back in 2010 I believe, so it's not really signifying a sequel I don't think.
However, assuming that Silicon Knights could have been working on ED2 before all the trouble they got into, it is feasible that Nintendo might have moved the game to another studio, causing a delay and requiring them to extend the trademark again.

Please may Nintendo pass this onto Platinum after they've finished with Bayonetta 2. Nintendo already have a great relationship with them. Not too sure they're the best dev company to go to though. Maybe this is a chance to go to a popular western developer they've not used to get closer friendships, like Crytek taking on a third person survival horror mystery game. It'd be a creative challenge for them (being used to First Person Shooters), and Eternal Darkness would look gorgeous on CryEngine3. We already know Crytek already have a Wii U dev kit, we already know they love the hardware, and Nintendo could give them business acting as publisher!

I hope that either PlatinumGames, Crytek, or Retro Studios (strong possibility) develop a sequel to Eternal Darkness for the Wii U.

If they do this sequel well, and advertise it this will attract new blood to Nintendo. Because it's the least "Nintendo" Nintendo game since the Metriod series.
PS: I personally don't mean that, but a "Space Bounty Hunter action shooter" is probably the most polar opposite to cutesy Mario and Kirby you can get. Zelda series follows a close second to that, but Eternal Darkness? It's a "bloody, mystery horror game" now I can't think of any other Nintendo game that comes close in tone to that.
