So I've played through both games/ seen each game played more than once each, and I find myself wishing some elements of Arkham Asylum had translated better into Arkham city. I absolutely loved both games, and I guess both games feel like Arkham games to me because Batman is in two completely different situations and goes about each situation in a very Batman-like way. Without huge spoilers, In Arkham Asylum, he's constantly on the trail of the main villain, while continuously running into innocent bystanders, etc, but In City, I didn't get much of  that pro-active Batman thing. Maybe I need to play through City again because  I'm not as familiar with the later half of that game as I am of Asylum's, but I just don't quite get the same "I'm putting the clues of the Joker's scheme together one piece at a time" detective work in City. Yes, he has some detective scenes, but the detective part of the story doesn't seem emphasized as much. Or is it maybe simply the kind of story they tell?

I don't know, I need to think about it some more. While I'm doing so, which game is everyone's personal favorite and what do you like/dislike about the games? Are there parts of Asylum that you thought were done better than things in City or vice versa? What d you guys think?

As much as i got hate for this, I prefer Arkham Asylum over Arkham City. Its like the beginning of Batman's videogame popularity that sky rocket off the heavens, the controls were awesome, the dark atmosphere really set the mood. They got the all star casts unlike Arkham City, like, Nolan North as the Penguin? Troy Baker as 2 face? Tara Strong as Harley? No offense to these guys I think they are great but I would rather prefer the original Animated series cast since Asylum was going that way. Also, I always get lost in Arkham City and always have to pause and look at the map, (this is the time where i got the Game of the Year Edition not Armored Edition.) But i still like it since they improved on the combat and gadgets, but i go for Asylum over City.

Both games are brilliant in their own right.

But the gameplay formulas, the story, and the clear sense of progress in Asylum (as well as some truly amazing moments) make it far superior to City.

Hopefully future ark ham games forego the whole idea of a big world just to be a big world. Asylum was one of the best games ever made.

City was great at what it did. But asylum was way more fun.

I didn't like the start of Arkham city, but the start of Asylum was better, City had a way better ending, though. So storyline wise they're about the same in my opinion, except City has way more sidequests to keep you playing longer after you've beat the game.

Traversing the city in Arkham City felt better than in Asylum, but the City felt like it was all the same, even though there were some interesting parts like the way it was flooded in areas and had the Jokers Island thingo which was cool.

City also had Catwoman and Robin playable, but neither were used to their full extent, with Robin only coming in in an extra story piece set after the events of the normal story.

Really, it comes down to preference. Do you like open, but somewhat bland maps, or a smaller, but less bland maps?

IMO I liked City more. Just...

Oh yeah, and City has ALFREEEEED!!!!!!!!!! Even though you never see him...

I think that was what I was trying to say above. I think Asylum is the better game for the reasons you said, but City is simply a different, more "Batman" traditional experience which is why it was just as successful. This does worry me about Origins though, hopefully they will be inspired by asylum as much as city.

I sold my Xbox 360 before I got chance to play Batman Arkham Asylum and my PC is not powerful enough to play it so I cannot compare the two, but Arkham City is amazing and I will be getting Arkham Origins, I really hope WB bring the first one to Wii U either at retail or eShop.

Honestly, I prefered Arkham Asylum, I don't know why either, it just seemed, darker, more of a metroidvania than City.

I loved both equally: Asylum gave me that Metroid feel (why do people say MetroidVania? I know SotN was great, but I think Metroid did it better), and City gave me that Zelda feeling. I don't think I could pick a favorite. I'm super excited about Origins and Blackgate though.

I played Asylum a few years ago then the data deleted itself but I liked the gameplay more than Arkham City. I wish they  would port Asylum over to the Wii U someday.

then you're missing out. I played it last night for an hour and I was amazed at how much more depth some of the characters have. I felt like Batman really KNEW his enemies in that game. City was really great too though.
