If always online happens I will just stick to retro, last gen and Nintendo consoles, I've had enough seriously, there are still 1000's of games I've never played so it doesn't bother me, plus sencond hand older games and consoles are dirt cheap so I save a ton of money with todays extortionate prices #dealwithit

Always online is already upon us for the most part.  If you want MiiVerse or any of the other online enabled channels and features to work, you need a connection.  The difference is whether the issue is forced by a manufacturer.  Forcing the issue in order to maintain basic functionality would be detrimental to a platform's success.

There is a difference between always online and being forced to maintain an internet connection for basic functionality. Most people keep their consoles connected all the time, fact. However, forcing users to stay online else their console bricks without it is the wrong way.

My modem/router hasn't been turned off in years. A know a large number of people who are the same, internet is cheap as.

Mine hasn't either, but there are still issues from time to time, and there are people who like to put consoles in their cars, or other places where maintaining a connection is difficult.

^^^ Do you really think console makers intend for their consoles to end up in cars ? I doubt it, So they would care little about that.

If he lived in the middle of Kansas where we have slow internet he would think differently.

That awkward moment when the middle of Kansas has the fastest internet speed in the country :X
