I'm sure that this has to be covered somewhere, but I can't find it.  I never owned the Wii, but would like to play Wii games on my Wii U.  Nintendo's website states that this is possible, but make it seem like you need all of the original Wii hardware (controllers, sensor bar, etc...).  I think I will have to buy the original Wii controllers in addition to the game?  Do I need to buy anything else?  Thanks.

You'd need to buy a controller and nunchuck, but that's all really.

Do you have a Wii U? If you don't, the Wii U has an option on the menu where it loads the Wii menu and does everything a Wii does. I suggest you buy a Wiimote with the Wii motion plus built in and a nunchuck. It all depends on what games you want to play.

What everyone else said above. Be aware it can't play Gamecube games due to lack of a gamecube port.

you get a sensor bar with the Wii U, but to play wii games you need a Wii Mote and Nunchuck.

What everyone else said. I just had to reaffirm the fact that the Wii U is extremely backwards compatible for Wii hard and software since, apparently, it will be the only next-generation console to honor their customer base's previous transactions, digital or otherwise.

classic controller or classic controller pro for games like mario kart, mortal kombat, goldeneye, monster hunter trio, capcom vs tatsunoko and super smash bros brawl,  if you ever pick them up. playing your wii virtual console games because the classic controller or classic controller pro is necessary controller to play every wii virtual console game and only certain few wii virtual console games work with wii remote or wii remote but every wii virtual console game works on the classic controller or classic controller pro
