This is a good thing. This means that Reggie Fils-Aime will report directly to Iwata, instead of him having to go through a "middle man", Reggie can go straight to his boss who would also be the president of the company, now if Reggie has an idea he can get it done faster because his boss is THE boss.
This is actually a very good strategy and as they said, it increases their agility overall. I hope that this actually turns out as well as they think.
Did not expect this. Honestly, I didn't know what to expect.
I think this could be good like some have said. Iwata shifting over to NOA could provide him some valuable insight as to how western gaming culture differs from Japan, thus, allowing him to develop a strategy that can deliver success for both the Wii U and 3DS in western territories. I also see an opportunity for him to open up better communication between NOA and western developers as well.
I hope for the best. This will be interesting.
I just hope this means that Iwata gets a better understanding of the US gaming world. I'm not saying they should westernize, merely that when he wonders why the 3DS isn't doing as well outside of Japan, he can see that many big games haven't been localized. Perhaps the dots will connect in his head. If Nintendo systems start receiving the kind of TLC in the US like they do in Japan then I have no doubt they'll do better.
But yeah, overall this is a good thing since it will hopefully decrease the time in between things going on in Japan and here in the States.

I thought Reggie was the CEO.
I really don`t understand anything about corporations!

Fair enough

Nah. Reggie is and will continue to be President and COO. Tatsumi Kimishima was the CEO of NOA. He will now become NCL Managing Director in Kyoto.

Who else in Nintendo is more qualified for the position? I'm dubious that Nintendo would be willingly to bring some stranger with no prior experince to such a prestigious title.

I think from the investors' perspective, Nintendo is doing fairly well in Japan, especially with the 3DS and gets more 3rd party software support there. Nintendo haven't been aggressive with western 3rd party developers since the N64 days (when they acquired Retro, Rare, etc) and they want to give Iwata a chance to have more oversight in the US market so he can be more aggressive in many areas to try and boost business.
It also makes him eat his own dogfood, because he has to focus on both Japan and US cultures for hardware design and game development, rather than giving NoA a piece of hardware and saying, "here you go, go market it". I think they want to align Nintendo business decisions to work for both cultures and markets.
I'm excited to see what Iwata can do now that he has been empowered to handle the western market for Nintendo.

I can't even tell if this is good or bad news.

Its good news because now Iwata will finally get to understand western gamers and have better communications with western developers and any ideas Reggie wnats to give to Iwata he can do it directly instead of going though a 'middle man'

i'm hoping Iwata's new role will result in...
Better advertisement for both the Wii U and 3DS.
Less crappy commercials.
More aggressive pushes for third-party devs.
Smaller localization gaps.

I'm not pleased. He has already decided E3 was a waste of time. I wonder what mistake he is going to do next?
