That's the exact reason I'm looking forward to X, it looks awesome and I can't wait to get it, I wonder why people keep forgetting about it, it was a very memorable trailer for me the moment I saw it, I still think nintendo needs it's own, dark and gritty superhero game, kinda like Infamous, something along those lines for the older gamers who are fans of Ninty..........

Well I think they need two things. They need an original new IP like you guys said, although a smash bros. like rpg is the complete polar opposite of what I'm thinking. Slamming a bunch of already existing characters into a new game style isn't what I want and Mario has been in several rpgs (Mario RPG for SNES, Mario and Luigi Superstar series, most of the paper Mario series). They need to approach a fresh genre, be it in game style or literary. I always kind of liked how Metroid was there scifi as Link was there fantasy. An FPS wouldn't be bad although I'd be equally happy with reviving Metroid Prime's play style there, or just an action-adventure game form a third person perspective as long as it was solidly made (those tend to be really hit or miss with me).

But Nintendo also needs to take better advantage of some of the IPs it already has. Kid Icarus Uprising was a good start despite the weird control scheme but I fear they will just halt right there. Can we get an actual starfox game? Just a straight up, no nonsense Starfox shooter as good as starfox 64 but not a port of it? I liked Adventure personally but I don't need a Zelda clone when I have Zelda. I didn't play Assault but from what I understand it was far from what we wanted out of starfox. We never got a starfox on the wii and that's unacceptable. With the wii u controller though we could do really cool things with that gameplay style.

Also isn't Fire Emblem a Nintendo IP? I guess its what you'd call 2nd party?

Isn't X based on xenogears?
or xeno wars or xeno something?

someone said there were references in the trailer...

They probably do need to make something new. I don't think they can change their flagship titles enough for them to remain something we care about for much much longer.

Well xenogears was Tetsuya Takahashi's first big rpg with squaresoft. Hes the father of the xeno series.

He, along with just about everyone who made the great rpg's squaresoft was known for, started leaving squaresoft around the whole eenix thing timeframe. Coincides pretty nicely with squeenix kinda going downhill.

Many of them ended up at monolithsoft. Including practically the entire xeno team.

Takahashi games strongly revolve around several things, science fiction, religion, and freakng sweet mechs.

X strongly resembles xenogears in all the most awesome ways.... But since square eenix owns the xenogears ip.... It cant be that.

Unless..... Nintendo bought the IP from square and the reason they arent showing the name in the teasers is because they are holding off to show that its xenogears in the actual trailer... Which would actually be megaton huge. But very unlikely.

As it stands, it appears X is a new ip, starring as Nintendos entry into the massive open world genre, with online questing multiplayer.

Nintendo regularly makes new IP's, they're just not advertised as much and never sell as much as their bigger framchises.

Exactly. The main problem is that they don't seem confident when it comes to new IPs, and that's why they end up rehashing the same series. And some flagship IPs like Metroid and StarFox, along with F-Zero, get burried alive.

I know the fact I just included Metroid here is controversial, but that's what Other M seemed to be doing to the franchise to many fans.

Just throw together a FPS with some generic looking space marine up against bugs and mechs in a war humanity is losing and they have a winner. It's what everyone else is doing.
