first off dont use air cooling on a beast computer. build your own water cooling unit. if you need help message me on here. I will walk you through it

My system would be limited to a 160W (200W peak) PicoPSU. Cooling shouldn't be the problem.

Wqasn't there a rumor going around just before E3 that Microsoft was indeed having cooling problems with the Xbox One?

I never heard any rumours.

I think I'm right.
ifixit Xbox One teardown
That big vent is the only intake for the cooling fan. So if you obstruct that vent you obstruct pretty much all airflow.

I believe that if you are in a warmer house and put something on top of the vent (like the case for a game), the console will overheat.

My Xbox One had been running non-stop now for about 2.5 hours and its running as cool as a cucumber. Mind you I've not got anything resting on top of it nor would I do anyway.

Approx. 50% of the top and sides of the console is pure vent.

And the tear down revealed an airplane propeller for a fan...

This thing is prob going to be much cooler than ps4 and have zero heating issues due to design.

Heck, it could probably cool your living room... The fan is gigantic.

I'd be much more concerned with ps4 cooling issues. Small enclosure with similar parts, faster memory, built in power supply, etc.

It seems ms took the safe route with regards to console size and made sure they had a comfortable margin to work with for cooling with a variety of specs, clock speeds, etc.

Though I do expect a redesign inside two years...

Yes I do think MS have tried to learn from their mistakes with the Xbox 360 regards design to try and avoid any major long term issues especially regards over hearing. The Xbox One may be bigger but I think this is intentional to make sure hear dissipation is handled well. There are what seem like vents on both half of the top as well as on the sides. Mine runs pretty cool and quiet especially compared to the first generation Xbox 360 and even the first generation PS3. I'm sure there will be a redesign in a couple of years time though making it smaller.

My point is it has only one intake, which is located on a surface that may be possible to obstruct.

The Xbox S wouldn't have a problem because it's odd shape would prevent something from sitting flat on the vent, but the Xbox One's flat case means that it may be possible. Admittedly it's unlikely because a game case may be too small so something like a magazine would be required, but it's doable.

Obstruction is different than design flaw which is was careful to have posted "by design"

It's a vent. The top draws air. . You don't put things on it any more than you'd cork the radiator to your car, starving the engine of coolant.

And it's a GIANT intake. Even partially obstructed, should see zero issues related to that.

That said, it's a ridiculously cheap and under engineered way to do it. Side vents a fan and with routing plastic would be a better move, but this is ms. And they aren't known for world class hardware engineering.

I was under the impression the Xbox One cooling was identical to the Xbox 360 S only bigger.

Basically, the vent on the top is the OUTLET, the entire rest of the case is the inlets. It keeps the whole console much much cooler as instead of blowing hot air from the CPU/GPU over the RAM chips, HDD, etc they are sucking cool air over those from the vents and immediately venting the hot air of the CPU/GPU out of the top of the case. Its very much the cheap and effective way of doing it.

The only reason PCs do not generally do this is because of their modular design. You cannot guarantee the case vents are in the right places to cool the chipset from intake air alone, so they are generally designed to be cooled from the air off the CPU cooler. Plus, not all CPU sockets are in exactly the same place, not all cases are the same size, so trying to fit a CPU cooler that PERFECTLY aligns with a cases external CPU vent hole would be very hard.

I do call BS on the Xbox One being water cooled though. Since when does anyone refer to heat pipes as water coolers? They basically do the same job but most people consider water coolers to involve a pump that pushes liquid over the hot components so they can be cooled far away via a big radiator. Heat pipes direct the heat but will also disperse it along their path, water coolers are insulated until it reaches the radiator so do not release much heat along their path like heat pipes do, that is the point.

Still for a games console, water cooling is pointless. The whole reason for water cooling is to move the heat around effectively when you cannot pick and choose where those heat producing components are located in the case (for example if you have a quad SLI where the cards are practically touching each other). A games console by its nature you CAN choose so heat pipes are fine.

The Xbox One has the most robust cooling system, purely down to its simplicity.  The PS4 clearly had more money spent on the design and is just as effective, but may result in the PSU not living as long due to getting hotter.  Then again, you have to weigh that against the Xbox One PSU getting clogged full of fluff as its more likely to be at carpet level, or hidden behind an entertainment centre, where people will forget to keep it clean.  So overall, I still think the PS4 is the better design and according to Eurogamer there is only 1dB difference in noise level once you are more than 1 meter away.
