EA's Richard Hilleman has said that the console industry has demanded too much from the consumer, with players turning to innovation in the mobile space for their gaming entertainment.

Where once young players learned from video games designed by Shigeru Miyamoto, they now pick up lessons in play from the touch screens of iOS devices.

"I thank Miyamoto for that," he said of the Nintendo designers historical contribution to games. "But he's falling down on the job. And for the past five years that job has been taken over by a dead guy from Cupertino."

"We've asked for too much time, too much skill, and too much money, sometimes all at once," he told the audience at D.I.C.E. Europe today.

"Customers today... are generally looking for a single fabric of play. They want their game where they want it, when they want it, and at a price they can defend to other people."

He suggested that the next generation of consoles can get gamers back if it learns from new trends, where players have become content creators and the focus in development has shifted from hardware to software. According to EA research, mobile games hold the attention for 90 seconds and PC games for 90 minutes, but consoles can keep engagement for two hours at a time.

"Once I get your butt on a couch, I can get two hours for sure. That granularity means I cannot build the same game on every platform. I cannot build Battlefield on every platform."

Next generation games consoles will be more focused on updates to software and services rather than hardware specs, which will scale back the reliance on physical sales and mean the systems will be in a constant state of evolution rather than staggered over time.

"We are no longer in step function; we are in evolution," he said. "We are not changing every four years; we are in continuous change."

"Gen 4 will increasingly become a surrogate to the development of the platform overall, to the point where the hardware doesn't even matter any more."

He also highlighted the importance of user generated content and artwork in the new gaming ecosystem, suggesting that users will be just as important, if not more so, than staff employed in-house.

"Maybe these guys are the new software artists, and that means they will be the key strategic resource for the future... And they know it."

Miyamoto's worst game is better than anything EA puts out.

Let's all just  stop caring about what  EA  says, because  all that comes out of their mouths nowadays is unicorn tongue.

Go sell your $60 games on iphones and tablets, let me know how it works out for you EA.  LOL  Seriously, are they so dense that they dont realize the reason those devices have grown in popularity is because the cost for games is so low on those devices?  My brother in law basically said he would rather get my 3 year old nephew a tablet for games because he can play tons of free demo's and even the full games are cheap compared to consoles and handhelds.  Its a growing market, but that is not the market to make millions upon million of dollars.  Yes its true that game development is far cheaper for those devices, but when the average game only sells for $5 or less, it takes a ton of sales to make any money.  Its pretty rare for games to sell a million units on those devices.  Its a totally different market, this is nothing but a ploy to take a shot at Nintendo.

"Miyamoto is falling down", says the man who runs a company that reskins their sports games every year (on Wii/3DS/Vita at least) and sells them as new products with no shame. Also microtransactions in every game they make. This guy has no right to say anything about the industry with his current position.

Wow.

The classlessness on display here is almost unbeleivable.

Where do they find guys like this?

Referring to Miyamoto as "falling down" when he had a hand in creating the revolutionary Wii U, the Pikmin game that just came out (which is awesome), and the soon to be released titles we are heavily anticipating.

Then... referring to Apple's founder in that manner (when Apple is the single biggest revenue source for EA) which both denigrates Steve Jobs as well as makes it sound like current leadership doesn't matter (64 bit phone cpu, fingerprint scanner, record sales, forthcoming revolutionary desktop, etc doesn't matter I guess).

EA's compeititors couldn't pay money to have them shoot themselves in the foot any better.

How stupid to say things like that publicly.

He's right.
Or at least he thinks he's right based on every single gaming article that's been written in the past 10 years.

Remember last year when an interviewer incorrectly translated that he was retiring?
The Internet on the whole thought it was good news.

He's actually complimenting Miyamoto and Nintendo, and siding with their philosophy.
It's good from EA, but of course it's just talk with zero substance behind it. They'll continue to make more sequels and push gaming into a crash.

Also it's hard to keep people happy when you made some of the best games of all time, for more than 25 years.
Especially when you're expected to make something new every year.

I don't think Miyamoto has done anything good in the last idk 6 years, still I think it's rude to say that to a legend. It's frustrating that this guy had the guts to say that the guy basically saved and paved the way to how the gaming industry is today.

What worries me the most if the people he's been teaching to handle his franchises.
I think Zeldo will be fine, Aonuma's been on top of that for ages already and seems to be doing well with fans.
Mario on the otherhand, Kowhateverhisname seems to have a hard-on for nostalgia. He needs to learn to take it somewhere new without a nostalgia crutch.
horsing tanoki.

Also Mario Kart looks to be going in a good direction (online heavy). I'd imagine as soon as Miyamoto dies he'll turn it into Super Nintendo Kart and get all the Nintendo franchises involved too.

I agree completely, some aspects of Nintendo needs to get with the times. I just feel that some dude from EA had the gutz to say that.

the whole idea of ps4, x1 being more "online" simply doesn't make sense.

You have multiplayer with Wii U online.

You have online entertainment.

You have MiiVerse social integration (actually MUCH harder to create than simply Facebook or Twitter post hooks)

There are some areas that need refinement (party chat, etc.), but the elements are there.

the only thing Nintendo needs to learn is how to take major risks without losing. Forming partnerships with other companies to help subsidize hardware, software, and services would go a long way to allowing them to create hardware that no one in their right mind would criticize.

Nintendo did a good job with Wii U. But the majority of the market doesn't want a good job. they want the Uberconsole. And Sony is giving it to them. Still, people will be surprised at how well the U competes when some effort is put in.

Fresh off the success of the Wii, Nintendo was in a place to go nuclear. Instead, they did indeed take risks, but stopped short of where they needed to go. the world has changed, the market has changed, people have changed. Nintendo isn't caught up with it yet. But they will be.

The great thing is that the signs of a more aggressive Nintendo, willing to go beyond anywhere it has ever been are there. From the risky gamepad to a brand new full scale social network, to increasing staff with cutting edge engineers, to corporate sructure changes, to outright funding third party games, they are serious. They may have been late in some areas of the market (including not have any worthwhile games available for half a year..., but the infrastructure for greatness is there. And they are adjusting at a fast clip. this is no sloth company. Perhaps also, Yamauchi (RIP) having passed may ease some of the unofficial influence from the sidelines, allowing the company to leave the old crust behind and move forward boldly into a new era.
