Perhaps the delay was partially on purpose. Maybe retro did want to do some more to the game and could of used time while Nintendo discussed the option of delay to help sales.
We all know there are a lot of games coming out, not just for Wii U, but 3Ds and third party titles too.
I suspect Nintendo doesn't want SM3D World or Donkey Kong TF to compete with each other in the holiday season.

I was more interested in this than Sonic but I will survive with SM3DW. Biggest concern is that if Retro has to keep working on this then the timeline of a possible Metroid game gets extended too

I think that is very unlikely and I doubt very much it will be delayed any further.

Do they have multiple teams to finish DK and start Metroid?
