It was a tough decision. The past year has been host to some amazing games, from the fantastic storytelling of The Last of Us and Gone Home to Grand Theft Auto 5's massive world and the impeccable tactics of Fire Emblem: Awakening.

In the end, the choice for game of the year came between BioShock Infinite and Super Mario 3D World, and Nintendo's plumber cleaned up at the awards.

Part of the decision came down to the fact that, while all of the games in our top 20 are special in their own right, they also have their fair share of annoyances and frustrations; runner up BioShock Infinite's inconsistent narrative tone and dual weapon combat is a step backward for the series, as just one example.

Super Mario 3D World, on the other hand, is a consistently joyous experience, from stomping the first Goomba to ascending the last flag pole. The game doesn't so much dip between highs and lows as it does highs and very highs.

Now, that almost makes it sound as if Super Mario 3D World earned our top honors by default, but to say that would be a disservice to a game that is bursting with creative design.

It starts with Super Mario 3D Land as a foundation, a game that reinvigorated the series by merging the focused challenge and linearity of Mario's 2D games with 3D freedom of movement and new obstacles to take advantage of more maneuverable space.

Super Mario 3D World builds on that foundation with inventive new power-ups like the cat suit, which gives Mario and friends air pounce and wall climbing abilities that facilitate some creatively vertical level designs.

The levels are the real stars of the game, whether it's a treacherous series of shifting platforms, subverting Mario tradition by carrying a piranha plant to devour foes or the little details like the sad sigh of a Koopa Trooper after you toss its shell into the sea.

Even the option to play as Mario, Luigi, Peach or Toad just further highlights the versatility in Super Mario 3D World's level designs, as each character's unique traits force you to approach each obstacle in slightly different ways.

The character options feed right into multiplayer which, thanks to the 3D levels, offers enough room for all four players to actually play through the level together instead of the impromptu Three Stooges routine of accidental deaths that accompanied any attempt at multiplayer in New Super Mario Bros U.

And yes, even the Captain Toad levels deserve special mention in Super Mario 3D World, breaking up the action with brief puzzle-filled interludes that offer some of the stiffest challenges in the game.

While many fans were, and still are, hoping for a return to Super Mario Galaxy's breed of platforming, Super Mario 3D World is far more than just a stopgap until Mario's next interplanetary adventure.

Super Mario 3D World is 3D platforming bliss. It's a game that's nearly impossible to play without an ear-to-ear grin the entire time, making it the best gaming experience of 2013.

i would of gone for GTA5 myself, i have 3D World but it is not as good as 3D Land on the 3DS, i get the feeling that 3D World was meant to be on the 3DS but Nintendo had to switch it to the WiiU because there were/are no games for it.

Bleh, personally it's not even close to goty, it would win disappointment of the year but not goty :(

It is nice to see it win goty though, proves it doesn't just need to be a shooter/war hyped up mainstream game to win.

It does to some people.

I'd have picked tomb raider.
3DWorld wasn't as good as 3DLand to me either, but it didn't start as a 3DS game, that should be obvious to brains.

I don't.
No point releasing a game a year late and then saying it didn't sell because consumers are assholes to you as a third party wah wah.

Gonna be so much salt in fangirls wounds about this, especially after zeldo3ds.
Great way to make money, drive up angry comments on this and soak that lovely advertisement money.

And some random site's opinion on GOTY is supposed to invalidate their opinions? Please.

I'd say it's quite incredibly harsh to say that Mario sucks, but... opinions.

My nitpicking about 3D world.

1. Forcing me to choose a different character to stand on a button for a stamp.

2. Silly level that made me poke the gamepad to open doors and move blocks (Not the toad levels, I liked them) .

3. Using the same mini boss monsters more than once. (My problem with other Mario games too)

4. Signs that tell you where to go when the path is obvious. (Problem with other games too)

So really, my complaints is about Mario in general since most the above happen in other series too.

I also prefer the older 3D mario format. Hope the next main series uses older format and ISN'T a sequel to galaxy.

Only thing I want from this game to cross over to the next is character selection, including peach.

It's not a bad game but it's also not the best.

Yeah, that's the worst one.

They try and say it's for other reasons, like "oh, the level design sucks" but that couldn't be farther from the truth. No games have better level design than Mario.

They just don't want to play it for fear of being labeled childish.

@ everyone who said that this is an opinion; I know that. But when people say that Mario sucks they never back it up with any info as to why they think that, and they say it as though it's a fact when 90% of the people that think it sucks haven't ever played said Mario game.

I want to see a bunch of Nintendo games win multiple GOTY's.  After what happened with gamespot, I need more to laugh about as people try to prove why a Nintendo game "sucks" and "doesn't do anything new".

I especially want Zelda ALBW to win, because it will bring handheld haters out of the woodwork.  I couldn't believe how many people had a problem with ALBW winning Gamespot GOTY simply because it was, and I quote, "A stupid handheld game for kids who like crap"

So your problem with 3dworld is pretty much that its actually a 2d mario style game.

I can understand that.

My wife loves this game though, knew she would, main reason I wanted to get it. SHes terrified of 64 style 3d marios, immensely and immediately intimidated to the point of refusing to play after just a few minutes. But she dove right into this one, because its 2d mario in 3d. Which I find hilarious as, as far as platforming and twitch response gaming, 2d style marios, including 3dlqnd/world, ar faaaaarrrrr more challenging and demanding than traditional 64 style adventure marios, which by design are more challenging on a cerebral level, rather than a twitch response platforming level.

Thats why Ive always been more interested in the adventure styke 3dmarios, and Im sure Im not alone. I enjoy the 2d mario's/3dland/world, as a nice break.... But when Im starving for any manner of game in my preferred genres, I dont really have anything to take a break from. I highly suspect id find 3d mario hugely enjoyable if I waited to play it until I had a well balanced satisfying library on.... Any combination of systems... (unfortunately, for me, Nintendo seems to be the last reliable bastion of the kind of properly done adventure gaming I play games for....) so, I would hold off on playing it... But alas I cant, my wife demands me to play it since she cant get past world 4 :P.
