Hi all, thinking of buying a Wii U for my 6 year old.  He loves Skylanders on the Xbox.  I was looking at the Wii U for a bit more of a portable solution.

Question - can the skylanders game be used without a TV?  I mean, completely without a TV, like while traveling in a car (assuming I still have the console plugged in:))?

The store I was at, the salesperson wasn't sure if a TV might be needed for some of the opening screens, etc?

Same question, I guess, for the Super Mario 3D game?

Thanks!!!

Yes and no.

Yes, most games can be played on the gamepad without the tv, leaving others free to use the tv for something, but no, you cant take it in the car, it must remain close enough to the console to work.

You would have to take the Wii U in the car with you to play there if that's what you're asking.

As said.

The gamepad is a controller not a stand allow system.

So you would have to hook the wii u up to the car. Some people have done this. And there was a guy that play a game on a train.

Also just to add. The gamepad must be within 30ft of the wii u in order for it to connect and work.

A TV is required to sync the gamepad when you first turn the system on, but beyond that it's designed in a way that the gamepad is more required than a TV.

Do you mean the first time you use the system, or every time you turn it on??

I do understand that the console is always required, and have a normal plug converter in the car to plug it into I think.  But if it requires a TV in front of it every time it is turned on, that is kind of a deal killer...

I dosen't require being in front of a TV everytime. Just the first time, and maybe for some other stuff. But starting up a game it dosent.

Though it also depends on what game and their method to switch to the gamepad (Why their is no default way, I don't know), Like Sonic Racing you swipe down on the gamepad screen, Assasins Creeds you go through the menu, Pikmin 3 you push -(?), and some games don't allow gamepad only at all like ZombiU and Lego City Undercover.

Though if your looking for really portable why not look into a 3DS / 3DS XL / 2DS?

A code of the 4 card suits are shown on the TV screen when you first turn it on to sync up, like a passphrase on your bluetooth phone.
Just the first time.

Why not buy one of those car dvd player sets, I've seen them going for like 20 euro, then you could use that as a TV and play dual screen games as well.

Only need the tv to set it up the first time.

Once you do that your good to plan on the gamepad without the tv.

I started up and play games on my wii u without the th before.

Why not get a 3DS instead?  Cheaper, legitimately portable, and has Skylanders.

Well, I do also like having the ability to play on the TV when home.  I know he'd like playing the Super Mario games at home.  Decided to go ahead with it.  Bought the 8gig Skylanders set at the local big box store (Futureshop) for 219, and picked up a copy of the 3D Mario game as well.  Will check it out tomorrow night as we are on the road visiting relatives today.

Cheers
