Because unlike Sony/Microsoft, Nintendo is actually focused on making a profit in the long run.

For the most part ninty had hardware that was equal to or better than the competition.

 

It's been just two gens I wouldn't call it always.

 

As for why, I would say it's because both the n64 and gamecube were more powerful than at least 1 of the competition and they both trailed behind in sales, then when ninty tried something different and made some weaker hardware it ended up being one of the higher consoles in terms of sales. So I guess to ninty it was logical to try something like that again.

SNES was more powerful than genesis.

N64 was more powerful than ps and Saturn.

GameCube was more powerful than ps2 and at least as powerful as xbox.

Wii was the first console where Nintendo purposefully underpowered the console in order to make a bet: motion controls. Nintendo had just had a very poor generation in terms of sales (despite a very powerful console at the time). Third parties simply didn't support Nintendo for various reasons ( strong competition from Nintendo's own games, monetary incentives from ms and Sony, and various political crap). At the start of the hd generation, Nintendo wasn't in position to spend (and lose) the ridiculous amounts of money Sony and MS did to build their consoles. Nintendo wanted to still be in business another hundred years. So they made a calculated bet and won big in terms of sales.

Then the current gen was warning up and Nintendo launched first. Normally this is a good idea to get an install base going enforce the competition. What they built was a highly engineered, powerful next gen system, that simply didn't have the right marketing (or games...)behind it to make launching first matter.

The competition countered with more CPU cores, newer gpu tech, more ram, and decidedly lower tech, last gen style controllers.

While ps4 and x1 use mostly off the shelf parts (though amd did their own CPU/gpu combos, Nintendo collaborated to make t he IBM CPU/amd gpu combo a reality), the wii u uses a highly engineered, almost embedded system approach, which is really what home consoles (save the original Xbox) have been for generations. Taking the CPU, gpu, and edram and including them together onto one module. The system as a result is powerful, runs cool, efficient, and lacks nothing in terms of performance capabilities. Even the CPU /gpu strengths (and weaknesses) play into next gen game design, with CPU being utilized for physics, ai, etc. and gpu pushing graphics.

The wii u is less powerful than the competition here, but nowhere near underpowered like the wii was. And it will be competitive.

But it does appear that Nintendo (and many in the gaming press) underestimated the risks ms and Sony would take with their console tech this gen. Sony in particular was hurting badly and wasn't seen as one that would risk spending a lot of money on an expensive console.

So in the end, Nintendo has created a weaker console for the second generation in a row. However, it's more ps2 vs gcn and xbox than wii vs ps360.
