I don't think the Wii U is going to be dropped any time soon. I don't think it'll have the 6-year lifespan of the Wii, but I think Nintendo will get some great stuff out of it as their R&D works overtime on the U 2

I think it's been said quite a few times that Nintendo won't be dropping WIi U for quite some time.

And I think it's also been said a lot that's it's way too early to decide the Wii u's fate.

Where are you getting this? All information points to the Wii U overacheiving this December instead of falling?  Everyone expected the Wii U to sell >500K worldwide for Dec2013 and VGC already has it selling 920K with a week left to go!!!  Even MC/Famitsu has it selling ~350K for the month with a week remaining; so I don't understand where the fall is coming from?

If you mean, you expect the Wii U to sell 200K-300K worldwide for the month of Jan 2014 maybe you have a slight point.  I however think that the Wii U could sell 400-500K worldwide this Jan 2014 (a good hold for a non-launch system) depending on system stock.  As I understand it the Wii U is still selling out this 1st week of the year (BB, TRU, WM, and Target all reports sell outs for the system) and at least shows the system had a good 1st week of Jan.

I am speaking about worldwide numbers for December: http://www.vgchartz....13&console=WiiU

In 2012 Wii U did: 1,775,117

In 2013 Wii U did: 1M+ (vgchartz info lacks the final week of december).

It`s about a 700k fall.

If you look at Xbox 360 1st december and 2nd december, it goes from 824k to 2M.
PS3 numbers are: 857k to 2.5M

Not to metion that the astonishing success of other next generation systems really puts a heavy red card on Nintendo's performance.

1 million consoles sold in december is nothing to be proud of, really.

In 2012, Wii U was a new system. I agree 1M isn't very good for december sales, but it isn't completely horrible either, and the sales during most of 2013 were completely horrible, mostly around 100k-150k/month worldwide. As for 2014... my guess is better than 2013, but not great.

Not only is Nintendo doing bad by itself, it risks being overlooked by MS and Sony`s success.

I think 2014 has the potential to be what 2013 was meant to be. The question "is", will Nintendo just trust on it`s release schedule and do nothing about VC and the so eagerly waited acount system? What will it do to end the brand confusion once and for all?

I hope not. But either way,, brand confusion is definitely not the problem since it has been "plaguing" Apple's products (iPhone, iPad, iPod, etc.) for years and that surely hasn't affected sales.

I don`t know much about that, but i don`t think Apple has a brand recognition problem. The way people "live" Apple, i think they are aware of what is what.

Nintendo`s problem isn`t just the name. Well, it`s the name, but also how Wii U is similar to Wii and the fact that Nintendo tried so much to push the gamepad since the beggining, that people confused things.

Even that talkshow host who loves videogames mistook it for an add-on, i think.

I just finished looking through the Famitsu sales numbers and Nintendo's sales are phenomenal!!! The Wii U in particular did something I didn't expect!!! If the Wii U goes on to sell 500K units in the Americas (all things seem to point to it) we could see a 1 mil worldwide sale for the Wii U this December.  That's launch like numbers people!!!  So do you think the Wii u is back or do you want to see the Jan2014 sales first before making that assumption?  The upcoming fiscal report for Nintendo is going to be very interesting indeed. I think Nintendo Wii U will end up underperfoming and will sell at least 7 mil Wii U's by the end of March 2014.  Still it bodes well for the Wii U as I expect Nintendo Wii U to sell another 7.5-9 mil units for the upcoming year based on the strength of their upcoming games!!!  MarioKart 8 alone should help pull a million units worldwider for the platform.

Really

I like your optimism, but i cannot see the WiiU selling double what it already has, the WiiU hasn't sold 750,000 a month since release & thats what it's going to have to average to reach 9,000,000 in 2014 !

If you look at all the comments and estimates about how horrible the Wii U is going to do this December; then you can see 1.0 mil  in sales for the month is an amazing feat.  You have to take a look at the fact the Wii U is selling against TWO launch holiday consoles and still holding their own.  This is a great sign that the console still has hope of being revived if it was able to put out very good numbers in spite of all the cards dealt against it!!! I see 2014 being a do or die year for the Wii U as Nintendo is set to release a few system sellers. If Wii U manages to attain a 16-17mil userbase by March2015 then the Wii U's demise should be considered to be exaggerated.  Mario Kart 8 should bump up the systems sales to a million or more worldwide.  Then you have Super Smash, X, Bayo2 and other "surprises" like Hylian Warriors to move systems this fiscal year ending March 2015. (I don't consider DC:TF a system mover this fiscal year as it counts towards last year's fiscal ending March 2014)

My answer is similar. Mario Kart 8 should bump up the systems sales to a million or more worldwide.  Then you have Super Smash, X, Bayo2 and other "surprises" like Hylian Warriors to move systems this fiscal year ending March 2015. (I don't consider DC:TF a system mover this fiscal year as it counts towards last year's fiscal ending March 2014) In addition, I expect the Wii U's price to go down again this September-October to $249.99 (a mainstream friendly price for next-gen system) and a holiday bundle that includes MK8 and NintendoLand for $249.99.  I also see retailers like TRU, Target, BB, etc doing a $25-$50 GC bundle on BlackFriday thru the holiday until the end of Dec2014.  If all of these are correct (it seems like the most common sense way to do it) the Wii U should easily sell 8-9mil more units if not more by March 2015!!!

I hope not. But either way,, brand confusion is definitely not the problem since it has been "plaguing" Apple's products (iPhone, iPad, iPod, etc.) for years and that surely hasn't affected sales.

While I do agree about brand confusion; (a problem that Nintendo hopes to solve by having the Wii sold as the mini instead of the original Wii U looking model) I don't think Apple has the same problem as Nintendo.  Everyone knows the diffrences between an iPod, iPad, or iPhone unless you are living under a rock the last 4 years or so; not so with the Wii U and Wii.  I still find people picking up Wii U software to play on their Wii and asking where they can buy the Gampad for their Wii.  It's a huge mistake for Nintendo in making the console look so similar to the original and the fact that Wii U doesn't sound like a succesor to the Wii as much as Wii II or Wii 2 would have been!!! It's a huge blunder on Iwata's part and I blame him Reggie and Miyamoto for not having the insight to do so.  In addition, they should market the Wii U's strength against their competitors through demo videos like: true backward compatibility, totally free multi-player online, upconversion of old Wii games, their multimedia capablities (Hulu, Netflix, YouTube, TVii, and Amazon Prime) and their AAA Nintendo franchises which will only be found on the Wii U.

the sales may go up a bit like with some of the other games releases, but they simply won't be more than double the average sales already,

as i said before i like your optimism, but it isn't realistic for the WiiU to sell 500,000+ for the next twelve months.

My prediction is the Wii U will slightly beat the Gamecube or get near the N64 sale range. SSB4 and Zelda U are coming out after all ;)

Even with Smash and Mario Kart 8? Are you kidding? It will be in the million range.

Stop quoting VGchartz for all that is good in this world. They like Patcher are never right about anything. When Nintendo announced Wii at 100m VG had them at 99 and still did not adjust for a couple weeks and when they did it was still off. Last week had PS4 at 3.4 million when Sony announced 4.2 VGchartz adjusted..to only 4.1. When it showed on VG that Trails in the sky on PSP sold 200k Tom LipSchultz told me was not even close to that number.

They are just guessing trolling that they know for sure but they actually have zero access to the actual data like NPD does.

When I mentioned Apple I was talking about the differences between each product in the iPod, iPad and iPhone series. But other then that, I completly agree with you on the lack of marketing.

We can only hope my friend. It really isn't looking good. Sont and microsoft are on the offensive and new games are being announced every day not including Wii U in development.. So the negativity of the console will continue until Nintendo shows Wii U has heavy hitters and won't be experiencing a drought this year. As far as sales I don't know they are picking up but ps4 is on a damn roll and is about if not already to outsell a console that launched a year before it

All the negativity might have a good part: it makes people curious; at least it made me curious about Wii U. I said to myself let's see why are people hating this console so much... After a lot of reading and watching youtube I ended buying my first home console ever - a Wii U, which I enjoy a lot and play every day with my family :)

Ps4 and x1 got the hype. That alone had people holding off. Now that everything is in the wild and people can see for themselves, the fairy dust has worn off and the actual value is more clear. Wii u has as much value as the others and people are liking it.

The one thing the wii u lacked was the most important: games.

Now, some good games are available with Pikmin, Lego marvel, Mario 3d, . And even better games on the very near horizon. Hype games like Mario kart, donkey kong, and smash brothers.

Got my kid sister (20 years old) an xbox, playstation, and x1 for Christmas (very spoiled kid. Lol). You know what she plays? Wii U. Mario all day. Need for speed as well, but she digs Forza over any other car game. After Mario, it's Lego Marvel ad nauseum. Like forever. And the screen on the controller is invaluable in that house since my folks like to watch old tv show DVDs often, so she can switch over in most games. My folks thing that's genius as well. They also happen to live where there is no internet. So the wii u system update being included on the Mario disc was sweet.

The wii u launch was a disaster. But it makes sense that it was. No games other than lazy ports of old tech available everywhere else

Now, there are good, well developed games, with more on the way.

I won't say that the wii u will sell great. I'm no prophet. But on the flip side, I won't pretend to know that the wii u will sell poorly either.
