http://mynintendonew...-in-early-2013/

"A rumour that has originated on NeoGAF suggests that Nintendo started working on a brand new platform in early 2013. The platform is supposedly a handheld, which would make it the successor to the Nintendo 3DS. This is a rumour, but it’s likely that Nintendo has already begun planning the followup to the successful 3DS console.

Almost certainly off-topic, but I don’t quite want to make a new thread, because it would go to carp quickly. Also, I’d need to post a source, and I don’t really want to get people in trouble. Anyway, Nintendo apparently started working on a new platform in early 2013 and has already selected a vendor for the SoC after talking to several potential candidates. The SoC might be based on an existing design, but will be changed to fit Nintendo’s requirements. I assume it’s for their next handheld, though."

There's not much to do with this information, and it's a certainty that Nintendo is thinking on its successors to current platforms. However, it's still fun to think about

They started on it in 2011.

I wonder if they went with a good soc or a japanese one.

Of course they did. Every console maker always starts development on a the successor sometimes before the nwest is released or shorty after. thing is some sites are trying to spin this as Nintendo admitting Wii U failed and in panic mode. If it's 3DS successor won't be because TEH 3DS TECK DER OLD! TALETZ WINR! Just They always start. Oddly only the original DS was conceived and released practically within a year. Was not even supposed to have polygonal graphics originally.

it's obviously the successor to the 3DS.

And other news the sky is blue.

Why do we already need a successor to the 3DS?

It's not that the product is coming out this year, or even next but as others pointed out in this thread, R&D can take up to a few years depending upon what they want to accomplish so this is not at all unusual.

Because it's never going to top DS numbers? The tech is aged? Nintendo doesn't even use the gimmick anymore.  We've gotten over like two dozen quality games that would of come out like within a five year period during the DS's life cycle.

You don't really need a rumor or leak to know they're working on a new handheld, it's something expected.

Like other's have said. R&D takes time.  Nintendo likes to do things as low budget as possible. The easiest way to do R&D with that kind of mindset is slowly over time. The fact that it's selling like hotcakes means it's almost too late. You want things like this to be done right. It suggests very smart, forward thinking from Nintendo. We probably won't see anything on this console until 2017 at the earliest.

lmfao. The GBA was selling like hotcakes too. Did it have a long life cycle?

PSP. PSP was in development for a few years and when they went full public Nintendo pumped out the DS as mentioned before. DS was the only system they rushed. It was a experiment of just GBA hardware with 2 screens and a SNES pad. Most dev kits had this early on before the blue kits. Like SEGA Saturn the abiliy to play 3D games was tacked on late. So even a rushed system hammered PSP 155mill to 80mill. 3DS was in development for years. Now it's elling great and Vita is doing so poor and Vita is the only real competition. 3DS has time to coast. By the logic Tablets compete with 3DS then my Roku competed with Wii because it has a motion remote and games or a TI86 calculator is competing with 3DS. It's Bullsnot.

Again with the no factual point thing...

As I've mentioned before on other threads. The 3DS has only had 2 waves of games(launch to Kid Icarus-ish and New Super Mario Bros 2 to the present). There are plenty of franchises to be explored. There has only been ONE Pokemon release. The GBA had 3. The DS had 5. We've got 3 to 4 solid years left before this system gets replaced. It's selling like hotcakes. We may see the successor in 3 years but it probably won't be relevant for 4-5. I'm sorry it doesn't have HD graphics, but the hardware works and the games are fun. If you can't see that these are the reasons that Nintendo makes their decisions (and why people play their games) based on things like this you have no business entering a discussion with any Nintendo fan.

Oh my goodness, lol.

, * 240p, a terrible CPU, crappy speakers, 3D not being used as it once was, Square Enix and Capcom developing more on smartphones than the 3DS,etc.

Apparently those aren't facts. I don't know what cave you're living in but you need to wake up to reality. Nintendo using low-end parts when  they are a billion dollar company worth more than Sony is utterly ridiculous. It doesn't take much money to invest in a better screen. A  240p screen in 2014 is absolutely a joke. 720p is the new norm on many smartphones and android devices. The handheld market is different from it once was 10 years ago. Times have changed. Technology has advanced.

Your argument that the 3DS is selling like hotcakes means nothing. The PS3/360/Wii sold like hotcakes, why make a successor when we could still profit off the same thing because it still sells so good? It's weak. Plenty of consoles/handhelds sold well in the past yet had short life cycles. Just because the DS had a "long" one doesn't mean the 3DS will have one. At this point the 3DS has had more franchises out than the DS.

* Animal Crossing New Leaf

* Pokemon XY

* Mario Kart 7

* Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon

* Two Professor Layton games

* Phoneix Wright

* Street Fighter

* Bravely Default

* Donkey Kong CR 3D

* Street Fighter 3D

* Resident Evil Revelations

* MGS

* Kirby DDD

* Monster Hunter 3 & 4

* Crashmo & Pushmo & Sakurai Samurai & Mutant Mudd & Liberty Maiden

* Project x Zone

* Two Zelda games

* Steel Diver

* NSMB

* Yugioh

* Yoshi's New Land

* Fire Emblem

* Smash 3DS

* Some 3DS games & more support coming this year.

* Starfox 64 3D

* Kid Icarus

We'll get Pokemon Z, Metroid, Zelda Majora's Mask 3D,  another Mario game, Starfox/F Zero and some new ips and that's it.

You are heavily delusional if you think that this is lasting to 2018. You really are. Nintendo has no competition in Sony anymore. They're going to be shifting their attention to the smartphone/android market. Nintendo can't afford to keep releasing old tech systems with specs from the 00s. They need to capture the casual audience by advancing with the times. You haven't proven anything. All you've done is cover your ears and pretend that Nintendo is the rainbow for using old technology because its so "cost efficient"

I expect Nintendo next console/handheld/hybrid to be AMAZING! The fact that this information is out there in rumor already point to good things IMO. I think Nintendo has realized they have to up their game. The negativity surrounding them as a company and their future i think will give them that kick in the butt they need. Everyone knows Nintendo is VERY secretivethey dont let things like this slip out even in RUMOR. You usually hear about new hardware rumors around the time its in developers hands. So this may actually be further along than we think. Maybe they are going to give developers "YEARS" to work and optimize code for this console so we wont have arttcles like the clickbate we just recently got from eurogamer.

Indeed. I believe they've stated that they start working on the next console as soon as the newest one comes out if not earlier.

@Ryudo: It really was pretty bad.
