A Tanooki isn't even a real animal. Heck, PETA even defended Koopas before. Out of all the animals on Earth, they defend Koopas, which are VIDEO GAME ENEMIES.

Um... you get the Tanooki suit from a leaf, Mario doesn't go out and skin the fictional creature. PETA should seriously just quit, there are better groups out there actually doing some good for animals while they make a joke out of protecting them.
Seriously, beaten and bruised animals don't need idiots trying to save them, they're doing more harm then good and it really pisses me off. Also nice work PETA on trying to protect fictional animals you damn dolts, why don't you go petition Skyrim for Dragon cruelty and while your at it degrade some women by putting them in cages or making fun of fat people... Uuuurgh I hate them so goddamn much.

I'm pretty sure the Tanooki Mario gets his abilities from is the mythical transforming Tanookis, hence the reason he can turn into a statue and the power comes from a leaf. I think the leaf helps the Tanookis transform or something in the mythos but then again the only experience I have with that part of the culture was a Ghibli film I watched called Pom Poko.

Seriously, they were willing to ruin Mario's image and now they say it is a joke. God they give animal rights activist a bad name ( I am not one but I know one and they are not like this).

To be honest, I've considered PETA to be a joke for a while now.

PETA, you just wasted money, that people donated to you for the cause of saving animals, on a flash game that slandered the name of a beloved global icon, and now claim that it was "all a joke."


Now that I think about it; no one even began to associate Mario with animal abuse until PETA's stupid stunt, so wouldn't it have been a better idea for them to put a positive spin on it instead of a negative one? Think about it. Kids love Mario. Wouldn't it of sent a better message to the kids if instead of accusing Mario of animal abuse, they had said something like "Hey kids! In Super Mario 3D Land, Mario uses the power of the Tanukie to save the day. But in real life, Tanuki are skinned for their fur. You can help by blahblahblahblahblah..." It would have been good advertisement for both the game, and PETA's cause. On top of that, PETA would have avoided all the bad publicity that this stunt got them. I guess PETA's just too stupid to think of something like that.

The one thing I do find funny is PETA aimed at the most obscure reference to try and rally the anti video game activists, I don't support them but had they have picked up on the fact Mario jumps on turtles then maybe they'd have stirred the pot enough to cause uproar from the people they are aiming to grab into joining their fight against animal cruelty. Instead they have made themselves look foolish and as such backtrack.
