Wonderful news for the Xbone fans.

Of course it will, all it will be is more direct access to functions the cards can do already.

Doesn't the Wii U have like DirectX 11 or something?

Also, what is DirectX?

I think it allows for more effects in a graphics engine and multimedia stuff and instructions to the GPU

Wii U can do Direct X 11 elements but believe it like Sony has since PS2 days is more based on OpenGL. DirectX is basically how Xbox got it's name and MS attempt to play monopoly in the PC and console market. I maybe wrong but seemed for a while devs and Valve preferred OpenGL over Direct X. May have some of this wrong if so apologies.

So this means older cards like the Radeon 7790 onwards will support DirectX12 as long as they are running Windows 8.1?

No, no consoles except ones made by microsoft have direct X. Direct X is made and owned by microsoft, its actually called Microsoft direct X. Its actually the reason its called the X box.

Microsoft DirectX is a collection of application programming interfaces (APIs) for handling tasks related to multimedia, particularly game programming and video, on Microsoft platforms. What most of these people are concerned with is Direct 3d, which is the api that handles the rendering of 3d computer graphics, so developers dont have to write it themselves as part of their game engine.

There is literally nothing any version of direct X can do, that cant be done on basically any modern hardware. All it is is an interface between the developer and the low levels of the machine. The convenience is a tradeoff for leaving power on the table.

Non microsoft equivilants would be things like opengl, opencl, and mantle. Which Nintendo is likely using in some customized form.

why wouldn't it be compatable?

Usually the next version of dx arrives on the scene and only the latest gfx cards support it. Eventually all new cards support the API.

I think the way to view this is that dx12 may be a more optimized dx11 with a few new features they didn't bake into dx11.

But it won't be the jump previous dx versions were from the last - unless x1 runs a limited version of it.

DirectX is an API.
http://en.wikipedia....mming_interface

An API provides an easy, plugable selection of commonly used tasks.
DirectX means that instead of doing
getScreen(){
do balls
}
balls(){
draw, monster card-o!
}
getScreen()

you can do draw.monstercardo()
It's to stop every programmer from re-inventing the wheel, and it's great. (API's, not directx specifically)

DirectX isn't or hopefully isn't being used on consoles.

I think it allows for more effects in a graphics engine and multimedia stuff and instructions to the GPU

no.

no, it means microsoft will likely lock out older versions of their operating system from installing the directx 12 api, to get people onto their newer operating systems. Like they did for XP, and Vista, with dx11
Depends what it does as to what graphics cards can support it.

Nintendo and Sony will never use DirectX. But, their systems maybe able to run that.

No i mean why would they make dx12 incompatable with xbox1, regardless of the card. granite it will be more limited and be closer to dx11.3 than dx12.  even just to claim its compatable for marketing/PR may be enough for x1 to feature it.

That's why. For a freshly launched system to not support a dx that releases shortly after makes the console appear dated (which bot ps4 and x1 are to some degree). So they have to figure a way to minimize that.

Also, there will be some improvements to the API, but it won't be any giant leap. Still, any improvement is welcome. MS does have a leg up on Open GL in many things. Partly by virtue of doing things first. Then the OGL contributors have to figure a way to do the same things differently-sometime less optimal than the way dx does it. So the API itself may be more efficient in some areas, lending to performance increase.

Details are out on DirectX 12, will believe it when I see it.

“Xbox One games will see improved performance and we’ll bring the same API to all Microsoft platforms,” said Microsoft's Anuj Gosalia during today's GDC presentation.
