Doesn't the Wii U have like DirectX 11 or something?
Also, what is DirectX?
I think it allows for more effects in a graphics engine and multimedia stuff and instructions to the GPU
Wii U can do Direct X 11 elements but believe it like Sony has since PS2 days is more based on OpenGL. DirectX is basically how Xbox got it's name and MS attempt to play monopoly in the PC and console market. I maybe wrong but seemed for a while devs and Valve preferred OpenGL over Direct X. May have some of this wrong if so apologies.

So this means older cards like the Radeon 7790 onwards will support DirectX12 as long as they are running Windows 8.1?

no, it means microsoft will likely lock out older versions of their operating system from installing the directx 12 api, to get people onto their newer operating systems. Like they did for XP, and Vista, with dx11So this means older cards like the Radeon 7790 onwards will support DirectX12 as long as they are running Windows 8.1?

Usually the next version of dx arrives on the scene and only the latest gfx cards support it. Eventually all new cards support the API.
I think the way to view this is that dx12 may be a more optimized dx11 with a few new features they didn't bake into dx11.
But it won't be the jump previous dx versions were from the last - unless x1 runs a limited version of it.
No i mean why would they make dx12 incompatable with xbox1, regardless of the card. granite it will be more limited and be closer to dx11.3 than dx12. even just to claim its compatable for marketing/PR may be enough for x1 to feature it.

That's why. For a freshly launched system to not support a dx that releases shortly after makes the console appear dated (which bot ps4 and x1 are to some degree). So they have to figure a way to minimize that.No i mean why would they make dx12 incompatable with xbox1, regardless of the card. granite it will be more limited and be closer to dx11.3 than dx12. even just to claim its compatable for marketing/PR may be enough for x1 to feature it.

Details are out on DirectX 12, will believe it when I see it.
“Xbox One games will see improved performance and we’ll bring the same API to all Microsoft platforms,” said Microsoft's Anuj Gosalia during today's GDC presentation.
