Also understand I myself am not much of a Metroid fan, Although i've been playing video games since i was five years old i've missed a lot of games and cannot seem to remember what games i have played. In essence i'm a gamer with no memories. For this reason, though i am part of this forum and post frequently enough, i can't talk about the good old days of childhood gameing... i missed that.
So... im not a huge metroid fan... but i like it (along with many games i missed) and would be willing to jump into the world given a new installment... so i play the waiting game.
Until then i play previous installments, a little late to talk w/ friends about or simply a game they will not play. So i come to these forums to talk about them.
I had rented Metroid: Other M (this is after had played parts of SuperMetroid and rented MetroidPrime3 ... both unfinished). I played it and thought Samus was a little too emotional.. for awhile. Recently i realized this new installment didn't break any previously made characteristics in the Metroid series... except one. The emotion had always been in the series , just presented in a different way (plot events, text, etc). But the solitude... the loneliness that had been there was not the same in Other M (doesn't seem important? sure it is). There were other characters that pulled away from that. Alongside this the characters themselves were not introduced very well... seemed a little blunt (ie: "hey, remember me?" queue cutscene depicting Samus and big guy at an academy that itself was presented bluntly). It wasn't very deep because it seemed to rush. The characteres didn't feel real or important , this makes the emotion Samus "feels" come out as a turkey dinner made for nobody at 2:00am by a robot. The fact that the emotion in the characters is missing really made me wish they weren't there at all , giving the player that sense of loneliness back. And yes, while you're playing Samus is , for the most part, alone but those cutscenes have a big impact on atmoshere after the scene itself. The fact that the game is so story focused also doesn't help and the sudden burst of new fiction about Samus didnt feel interesting even though it was the focus and had very detailed cutscenes to boot.
I know this is starting to sound like a review... i apologize.
But this short paragraph is all of the bad things about Metroid i could pull out of my head.
Past that Other M had very exciting combat and was accesible for unskilled gamers like me. I finished the campaigne with a reasonable percent (i forget what it was now) within the week i had it rented. Ok i lied, it was a little too short, ok now that is all the bad stuff.
Other installments in the Metroid series have great, expansive worlds and hidden stuff, puzzles and equally as good combat, if not better due to a difficulty curve. This is Metroid, an incredible series that should continue on for a long time. This is one of the early greats in Video gaming history (as video games are still pretty new). Since i have just barely dipped my foot in games and have little things to say or speculate on this topic i wanna hear your opinion (figurativly of course as this is only text posts and i might forget to check back on this... if i can accidentally forget my childhood happiness, i can forget about this). I understand that there is a good sized block of text devoted to the problems in Other M, but trust me i do like Metroid, i just cant remember enough specifics to make my case, a problem i have with my gamer friends all the time. I'd like you guys to make... or break .... my case on Metroid and possible speculate on future mechanics and what not.
So in conclusion for those of you as impatient as i, and decided to skip the text above.
Can't remember stuff, a conversationalist with nothing to say.
Metroid Other M: Blunt and kinda thin story
But had great combat and what not
Overall i like the Metroid series, eventhough i've hardly played it and have only finished Other M.
I want to hear your voice.. figurativly.
..... GO!
