A number of fans of the Sonic franchise were surprised when the company announced and launched downloadable content for the recent Lost World that used the style and the characters Yoshi and Zelda from the well-known Nintendo series.
The development team in charge of the title at SEGA says that the choice was made in order to deliver a more interesting and unexpected set of challenges for players and because of the long-term relations between his company and Nintendo.Takashi Iizuka, a producer working on Sonic Lost World, tells 4Gamer, “Sonic Lost World is a title that only released on Nintendo hardware, which is an opportunity that I couldn’t believe, collaborating together. This time, the appearance is interesting, as combining Sonic into such a world is extremely foreign, and I wanted to aim at the unexpected.”Apparently, the team needed about three months to create the two new levels, as it took the time to absorb the essence of the character and decide the fun aspects that could become part of its title.Iizuka adds, “In normal production, the hardest part is building up the base of the game. Stages can normally be changed simply by variations, but this time, it was shaped to be a different experience on each stage of the DLC, which is why it took so long to complete.”The team says that the music, sound and songs of The Legend of Zelda were entertaining to try and re-create and is now interested in working on more levels that allow it to collaborate with Nintendo. The Legend of Zelda DLC for Sonic Lost World is free for all those who have bought the title. At the moment, the core Sonic team at SEGA is working on a new title that will use the traditional look and mechanics of the series, which will get more details later during the year.At the same time, Big Red Button, an entirely new studio, is working on a new version of the entire game universe, called Sonic Boom, which will use an entirely new aesthetic and is designed to accompany the delivery of a new range of toys and a new cartoon series. The look of the new title is designed to appeal to Western audience, will not be launched in Japan and will allow players to control Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles Tails Prower, Knuckles the Echidna and Amy Rose.Follow @softpediagames
