' And many comics and movies still portray women as damsels in distress. ''

A 24-year-old model who was dressed as Wonder Woman on Saturday, said:
"People who are the kind of people who are going to take a photo of you when you're not looking from behind are going to do that regardless, whether you're in costume or not."

Not saying calling people tangerines purely for the way they dress is right, but at the same time there has to be give and take. If you want people to stop using women as "decorations" you have to also tell women to stop letting themselves be used as decorations. Also there is a certain level of decency expected in dress for both men and women. You can't just expect people to eliminate sexuality so you can dress however you want.

This seemed to be... surprisingly well done for the most part.

There isnt a heaping helping of obnoxious sweeping generalizations, and some pretty good points from a person interviewed with a considerable amount of experience.

Toni Darling, a 24-year-old model who was dressed as Wonder Woman on Saturday, said the issue goes way beyond Comic-Con.

"I don't think it has anything to do with cosplay or anything to do with costumes," she said. "People who are the kind of people who are going to take a photo of you when you're not looking from behind are going to do that regardless, whether you're in costume or not."

She clearly points out in her experience as a whole, that its certain INDIVIDUALS who behave this way, regaurdless of whether at a convention or not, and doesnt actually have anything to do with comic book culture, or as an extention, videogame culture etc.

She also points out she notices the problem they create, which include ramnifications from responses to such behavior, like 'geeks for CONsent' affects others as well:

She noticed discomfort, uncertainty and fear from earnest fans, when she was performing FOR photography, and had this statement for 'geeks for CONsent':

"'Needs a clearer statement from Geeks for CONsent'. She found some fans were afraid to take photos, even when she was posing at a booth on the showroom floor."

Interestingly,Toni and Geeks for CONsent are in direct conflict with each other.

Geeks complains about scantily clad women being 'used' as decoration, for sexual objectification. This assumes an incredible amount about these women, disregaurding and dismissing their intelligence, agency, and personal motives. It would be one hell of a hilarious ride to dive into but i digress...

The only solution to the geeks problem would be to tell/make those women stop what they are doing.

In which case geeks may want to talk to Toni about how they are taking bread off her table.

That aside, Geeks is spot on about these conventions needing a formal statement about sexual harrassment groping etc: There is absolutely no reason not to have one... And im kind of shocked they dont yet.

While they probably should make one it won't do anything. Everyone who would be sexually harrassing people has heard the sexual harassment is bad speech before. They either don't care, or don't think what they're doing is actually harassment (usually the latter).

I dont think you understand what a formal policy is, and how it differs from a 'sexual harrassment is bad speech'.

Everyone knows these rainbowstains dont care, it is mind numbingly obvious, and the fact you brought it up as if it was a 'thing' that proved some 'point' is face palmingly redundant.

Thats WHY they want a formal policy, formal policies have legal accountability, consequences, and repurcussions for breaking them, 'speeches' do not.
